CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In the final game of the Charlotte Invitational, the Lehigh softball team dropped a 3-1 decision to the host 49ers Sunday at Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium. Sophomore Maddy Clark held her own in the circle in her first start of the season, but Charlotte plated a run in the second inning and two more in the fifth to knock off the Mountain Hawks.
Â
Charlotte's Kari Shedrick led off the second inning with a double and scored the game's first run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Savanna Nguyen.
Â
Lehigh (2-8) put two runners on in the third inning and then had two on with nobody out in the fourth but could not capitalize. First-year Lizzie Kern drilled a ball to deep left center that was run down to end the top of the fourth inning with runners on second and third.
Â
The 49ers added to their lead in the fifth with a double and two RBI singles, all of which came with two outs. Jenna Lord and Shedrick delivered the RBIs as Charlotte took a 3-0 lead.
Â
The Mountain Hawks pulled a run back in the sixth as senior Julia Mrochko led off with an infield single and then scored from second when sophomore Holly Lovett reached on a throwing error.
Â
A pinch-hit single by senior Maddy Schmeiser in the seventh brought the tying run to the plate, but Abby Gawlinski retired first-year Kelly Fricker on a comebacker to end the game.
Â
Clark was charged with three runs on six hits over 4.2 innings. She walked one and struck out two before giving way to junior Chloe Hess, who allowed two hits in 1.1 innings.
Â
Lehigh mustered five hits against two Charlotte pitchers. The 49ers moved to 7-9 on the season.
Â
Next weekend Lehigh will head to Lynchburg, Va., for the Liberty Invitational, beginning Friday with two games against Appalachian State beginning at 4 p.m.
