Mountain Hawks Hold Off Lafayette To Secure 11th Straight Indoor Sweep

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In a tightly-contested battle, the Lehigh men's track and field team edged Lafayette 91-89 Saturday at Rauch Fieldhouse in The Rivalry, presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute. The Mountain Hawk men won just seven events, but a strong showing in the field and a number of second and third place points carried Lehigh to its 11th consecutive victory in the indoor Rivalry series.
The score was originally reported as a 96-89 Lehigh victory but was amended Sunday after a scoring adjustment.Â
THROWS
Senior Liam Lovering captured both the weight throw (17.63m) and the shot put (16.18m) for two of Lehigh's event wins. Junior Joe Nowakowski posted a PR of 16.04m in the shot put to finish second and move into eighth all-time, while senior Ethan McHugh was third in the weight throw. (14.80m).

JUMPS
Lehigh claimed the top three spots in the long jump, led by first-year Jaden Ferguson, with a mark of 6.91m. Senior Daniel Givens claimed second place with a jump of 6.65m, while sophomore Andrew Clark jumped 6.54m to finish third.

Givens won the triple jump, with an effort of 13.51m, with senior Jordan Layos (13.36) and Ferguson (13.33) claiming third and fourth place. Givens' final effort was a centimeter ahead of Lafayette's Quinn Curtain, which ended up being a key factor in Lehigh's ultimate two-point team victory.

Senior Skyler Mott led a 1-2 finish in the high jump, clearing 2.00m, while Ferguson cleared 1.92m.

First-year Sayyidakbar Akbarov led Lehigh in the pole vault, clearing 4.40m.

MID-DISTANCE/DISTANCE
Senior Aidan Lynch kicked off track action with a win in the mile, with a time of 4:23.61. First-year Charlie Butler finished third (4:27.56).

Lehigh finished 2-3-4 in the 500m, with senior Ethan Hood claiming second in 1:07.59, sophomore Logan Haverkamp claiming third with a PR of 1:07.87 and first-year Peter Priestner finishing fourth (1:08.91).

The Mountain Hawks went 2-3-4 in the 800m with junior Daniel Malatesta delivering three team points with a second place finish in 1:57.03 and sophomore Thomas Smigo claiming third place and two points with a time of 2:06.22. Both men earned PRs as did first-year Isaac Greene in fourth (2:08.33).

First-year Ian Zalewski, sophomore Aidan LaTourette and junior Henry Burd finished 2-3-4 in the 1000m. Zalewski posted a PR of 2:32.53 to lead the way.

Senior Kevin Harvey led Lehigh in the 3000m, finishing third in 8:37.57.

SPRINTS
Senior Patrez Thomas won the 200m with a time of 23.09 seconds and also led Lehigh in the 400m with a third place finish in 51.20. Sophomore Aiden DiBuono posted a PR in the 400m (53.29) to finish fourth.

In the 60m hurdles, senior Jonathan Bennett (8.34) and sophomore Nathan Oliphant (8.36) finished 2-3. Sophomore Eddie Moore posted a PR in the 60m dash, finishing with a time of 6.91, just .01 behind the winner from Lafayette, to move into a tie for second all-time. First-year Quinten Slaughter finished third with a time of 7.03.

RELAYS
Lehigh finished second in the 4x400 relay with Haverkamp, Slaughter, Moore and Hood posting a time of 3:28.51. The quartet of first-year Charlie Butler, Zalewski, Malatesta and Lynch took second in the meet-ending 4x800 relay with a time of 7:58.72.

Lehigh will be back in action Friday at the Fastrack Nationals in Staten Island, N.Y.Â
