Lehigh Rolls to 49-13 Victory Over Wagner On Dog Day, Presented By JFR Salvage

9/7/2024 4:12:00 PM | Football

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh used four first-half takeaways to build a 42-0 halftime lead and the Mountain Hawks never looked back on the way to a 49-13 win over Wagner in the home opener Saturday at Goodman Stadium on Dog Day, presented by JFR Salvage. The Mountain Hawks' seven touchdowns were scored by seven different players as Lehigh scored its most points since 2018 and enjoyed its largest margin of victory in 17 years.

The Mountain Hawks' first home victory under head coach Kevin Cahill evens Lehigh's record at 1-1.
Wagner (1-1) was forced to punt on the game's opening possession and while Lehigh's went 3-and-out on its opening drive, the Seahawks muffed the punt by first-year Connor Poole, with sophomore Mason Moore recovering at the Wagner 17. Three plays later, graduate student Dante Perri connected with junior Geoffrey Jamiel on a 16-yard scoring pass to give Lehigh the 7-0 lead.

The Seahawks' next two drives ended in Lehigh interceptions. Moore picked off Damien Mazil and returned the ball to the Wagner six yard line. On the next play, first-year Jaden Green scored on a six-yard run to double the Lehigh lead to 14-0.

Junior Nick Peltekian ended Wagner's next drive with the first of his two interceptions on the day. Six plays later, sophomore Luke Yoder scored from 11 yards out as Lehigh led 21-0 after one quarter.

Lehigh added 21 more points in the second quarter to go up 42-0 at halftime. First-year quarterback Hayden Johnson scored on a 45 yard run midway through the quarter and then Lehigh added two more scores in the final 1:03 of the half. Perri scored on a two-yard keeper. On the next Wagner play, Peltekian stepped in front of a Mazil pass and raced 27 yards for the touchdown to put Lehigh up by 42.
Green returned the second half kickoff 49 yards into Wagner territory and three plays later Lehigh scored its final touchdown on a 37-yard connection from Perri to sophomore Mason Humphrey.

Lehigh out-gained Wagner 274-249 with 198 of the Seahawks' yards coming after the Mountain Hawks had built a 49-0 lead.

The Mountain Hawks rushed for 190 yards, with six ball carriers all gaining at least 10 yards. Yoder led the way with 64 yards on nine carries.

Perri finished an efficient 6-of-8 for 84 yards and two touchdowns. Humphrey was the top receiver with 43 yards on two catches.

Junior Brycen Edwards was the top tackler with nine stops. Sophomore Will Parton added six tackles.

Lehigh's 49 points were its most since scoring 45 in a win over Bucknell in 2018 and its 36-point margin of victory was the largest since a 45-0 win over Georgetown in 2007.

The Mountain Hawks are back on the road next Saturday when they travel to LIU for a noon kickoff. The game will be broadcast on NEC Front Row with audio coverage on Fox Sports Radio 94.7 FM and 1230 AM and LVFoxSports.com.

EXTRA POINTS… Lehigh's 42 first-half points were its most since scoring 42 in a 63-35 win at Yale in 2016… Jamiel's first-quarter touchdown catch gave him 100 career receptions and put him over the 1,000 receiving yard mark for his career… Lehigh's three interceptions in the first half matched its total from the entire 2023 season… all five Lehigh quarterbacks on the roster saw action… juniors Tyler Ochojski and Matt Spatny secured Lehigh's first two sacks of the season… Saturday's game featured heavy rains through much of the second quarter and a light drizzle throughout the second half… the Dog Day attendance was 2,920… Lehigh won its home opener for the first time since 2018.
