BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – On a warm, sunny Saturday on Long Island, the Lehigh football team used a pair of long offensive drives and a late defensive stand to pick up its second straight win, as the Mountain Hawks defeated LIU 20-17 at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
Â
A 27-yard touchdown pass from graduate student Dante Perri to sophomore Mason Humphrey put Lehigh up 20-14 with just under six minutes to play in the third quarter and the Mountain Hawk defense yielded just a field goal the rest of the way as Lehigh improves to 2-1 on the season.
Â
LIU (0-3) got the ball back on its 24-yard line with 1:57 to play, and after driving into Lehigh territory, a big tackle by graduate student Mike DeNucci on third down and then a run stuff by sophomore William Parton on 4th-and-2 helped the Mountain Hawks secure the victory. Â
Lehigh held a time-of-possession advantage of nearly 34 minutes to 26 for LIU. The Sharks out-gained Lehigh 320-275, with the Mountain Hawks racking up 136 rushing yards, their 10th straight game of more than 100 yards rushing.
Â
Sophomore Luke Yoder led the way offensively with 94 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. Lehigh quarterbacks completed 10-of-18 for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Perri finished 6-of-13 for 113 yards and first-year Hayden Johnson went 4-of-5 for 26 yards and his first career touchdown pass.
Â
The Sharks opened the scoring on their second possession on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Luca Stanzani to Michael Love. Lehigh answered on its next possession with a 6-play, 65-yard scoring drive, with Yoder racing right for a 10-yard touchdown on 3rd-and-8, with Nick Garrido's extra point tying the game at 7-7.
Â
Johnson made his first appearance of the day with 8:52 left in the second quarter and engineered a 16-play, 67-yard drive. Johnson capped the drive by hitting junior Geoffrey Jamiel in the back of the end zone for a seven-yard touchdown. The two-point pass attempt was no good and Lehigh led 13-7 with just 12 seconds left in the second half. Â
Five minutes into the third quarter, LIU went back in front on a three-yard pass from Stanzani to Love on fourth down.
Â
After an exchange of turnovers, Lehigh answered, going 55 yards in five plays and taking the lead on the pass from Perri to Humphrey.
Â
LIU drove into Lehigh territory late in the third quarter, with the Mountain Hawks' defense stiffening and limiting the Sharks to a field goal to make it 20-17.
Â
Lehigh successfully milked 4:44 off the fourth-quarter clock on a 10-play drive behind strong running from Yoder and a pass interference penalty that kept the drive alive.
Â
Five Mountain Hawk receivers caught passes Saturday, led by Humphrey, who corralled three for 41 and a touchdown. First-year Logan Galletta caught two for 47, including a 42-yarder in the first quarter on Lehigh's first touchdown drive.
Â
Defensively, four Mountain Hawks finished with five tackles: Parton, and juniors Brycen Edwards, Nick Peltekian and Tyler Ochojski.
Â
Stanzani completed 16-of-26 for 154 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for LIU. He added 62 rushing yards on nine carries. Ethan Greenwood was the Sharks' top rusher with 65 yards on five attempts.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will return to Goodman Stadium for their next two games, beginning next Saturday when Lehigh hosts Princeton on Family Weekend, presented by PSECU. Game time is set for noon. Tickets can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-758-4263 during business hours.
