LEWISBURG, Pa. – After an impressive outing in Friday's 3-0 sweep of rival Lafayette, Lehigh volleyball hit the road on Sunday for their first Patriot League road match of the season. The Mountain Hawks squared off against the red hot Bucknell Bison, falling in four sets on the road.
"Today was a tough battle," said head coach Alexa Keckler. "Both teams played great defense. It was an intense and competitive match."
Lehigh (9-5, 2-2 PL) continued to ride their momentum from Friday night's big win to begin the match, picking up a 25-22 first set victory. Bucknell (12-1, 4-0 PL) entered the day riding an 11-match win streak, having only dropped one set in their first three Patriot League contests. Despite this, Lehigh overcame several deficits throughout the frame to hand the Bison their second set loss of the league season.
The second set was once again closely-contested between the Mountain Hawks and Bison. Bucknell opened a six-point lead at 13-7, but Lehigh was able to cut the lead to one on several occasions throughout the set. With the score set at 23-22, Bucknell secured the final two points to tie the match at one set apiece.
The third set once again a hard-fought contest between both sides, as neither team was truly able to separate itself from one another. Leading by one, Bucknell scored three unanswered to take a four-point lead, which gave them an advantage they wouldn't relinquish. The third set once again ended with a 25-22 score in favor of the Bison. Bucknell rode the momentum from the previous two set wins into the fourth, winning 25-16 to seal their 12th consecutive win.
Sophomore Alysia Fingall had nine kills on the afternoon to lead Lehigh while also logging 19 digs. Senior Makena Smith dished out a team-high 23 assists while senior Kyleigh Brown's 24 digs paced the Mountain Hawks.
Lehigh will take a trip to Maryland next weekend for road Patriot League tests against Navy and Loyola. The Mountain Hawks will play the Midshipmen on Friday, October 4 at 7 p.m. and then head to Baltimore to take on the Greyhounds at 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 5.
"We have to get healthy first and foremost," said Keckler. "This week we'll keep working on our ball control and offensive choices."
