Women's Cross Country Cruises To 19th Straight Win Over Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. – The very first meeting between rivals Lehigh and Lafayette took place Saturday morning in Easton for the annual 6K rivalry dual meet race. Women's cross country earned the Mountain Hawks' first win over the Leopards this season, winning by an impressive score of 15-47 to extend their winning streak to 19.
"This is never a meet we take lightly," said head coach Debbie Utesch. "It is a privilege to be part of this rivalry and represent generations of Lehigh cross country runners. We were proud to be able to take the win today and continue the streak."
The Mountain Hawks ran a nearly perfect race, as 15 is the lowest score they could have possibly achieved. Lehigh took home each of the top five spots in the race and placed eight runners in the top ten. Senior Maddison Hayes led the way, crossing the finish line first in 22:02.2 to claim her first individual race win. She was followed by first-year Kaitlyn Highduch (2nd, 22:06.9), junior Lucy Afanasewicz (3rd, 22:13.1), senior Savanah Beavers (4th, 22;17.6) and sophomore Hope Trimmer (5th, 22:26.2) in the top five.
"It was great to finally put the majority of the squad together," said Utesch. "We have a number of women that could have won the race today. I was thrilled to see Maddie Hayes capture her first individual race win in her final rivalry meet. I also have to shout out Hope Trimmer, who helped secure the 1-5 Lehigh sweep in her first collegiate cross country season."
Rounding out the top ten for the Mountain Hawks was sophomore Grace Hughes (7th, 22:38.3), first-year Brenna Dahlgren (9th, 23:04.4) and first-year Sadie Millett (10th, 23:04.8).
"I saw a number of our women transition from running 6000 meters to racing 6000 meters today," said Utesch. "Our younger student-athletes are gaining confidence as they adjust their running style and test their limits, revealing some toughness in the process."
After competing twice in the past two weekends, Lehigh will return to action on October 5 for the 50th annual Paul Short Run hosted on Lehigh's Goodman Campus.
