COLLEGE PARK, Md. – For the third straight weekend, Lehigh volleyball traveled for an away tournament prior to the team's home-opener next weekend. The Mountain Hawks began the weekend against the Maryland Terrapins, dropping a 3-0 result to the home team.

"I think we did a pretty solid job competing for about three quarters of each set," said head coach Alexa Keckler. "The last six or seven points we didn't execute the way that we needed to execute to win."

Lehigh (4-3) and Maryland (5-2) battled in the first set, with the score remaining fairly even all the way through. The lead changed hands five times in the frame, including a 17-16 lead for the Mountain Hawks. However, the Terps uncorked a 7-2 run to put them two points of the set. Despite a late Lehigh rally to set the score at 23-22, Maryland secured the final two points of the set on attacking errors to win 25-22.

Although Maryland earned the win in set one, Lehigh opened the second with a 4-0 run thanks to three-straight kills by junior Madison McCartney. However, the Terps stormed back to take control of the set, embarking on a 14-5 run to lead by five. Maryland kept the lead for the rest of the set on route to a 25-17 win.

The Terrapins captured the lead early in set number three, holding a three-point lead early on. Despite having their backs against the wall, the Mountain Hawks rallied back to tie the set at ten apiece. However, an ensuing 5-1 run by Maryland put them back in the driver's seat, leading the Terps to a 25-19 third set victory and match win.

"We have to continue to focus on how we're able to execute the gameplan and put ourselves in a position that we're confident enough to score and defend," said Keckler. "Defensively tonight we weren't on point with our defense and blocking… our inability to hold the serve for long runs makes a huge difference when you're trying to get an edge."

Sophomore Alysia Fingall tallied six kills on the night to lead Lehigh, while McCartney, junior Natalie Luscomb and sophomore Jaidyn Garcia each added five kills. Senior setter Makena Smith posted 16 assists while senior Kyleigh Brown's six digs led the Mountain Hawks.

Lehigh will travel north to Baltimore on Saturday for a doubleheader against Coppin State and UMBC. The Mountain Hawks will face the Eagles at 12 p.m. and the Retrievers at 6 p.m.

"We've got to let this match go and learn from it," said Keckler. "If we can kind of go back to the basic piece here and get after it then hopefully we'll bounce back tomorrow."
