Lehigh Beats Army 5-1 To Stay Alive At Patriot League Tournament

5/9/2024 7:41:00 PM | Softball

BRIGHTON, Mass. – The Lehigh softball team bounced back from a 1-0 loss to Bucknell in the opening round of the Patriot League Tournament with a 5-1 victory over Army West Point in an elimination game Thursday at Boston College Softball Field.

The Mountain Hawks got strong pitching performances from all three hurlers that worked Thursday and the bats woke up against the Black Knights to keep the season alive.

Lehigh (31-19) will now face the loser of Boston University and Bucknell's in an elimination game Friday at 2:30 p.m. at BU Softball Field. Thursday's three tournament games were played at Boston College with the remainder of the tournament expected to return to Boston University's field.

After being blanked by Bucknell's Madison Roukey on four hits in game one Thursday, Lehigh struck early in game two. With two in scoring position and one out, graduate student Josie Charles beat the throw home to score on an RBI fielder's choice by senior Brooke Cannon.

Army West Point (14-39) tied the game in the third inning on Ashton White's RBI double, but junior Maria Urban worked out of further trouble to keep the game tied 1-1.

Lehigh took the lead in the fifth on a single up the middle by first-year Gracie Smith and tacked on a second run in the frame when first-year Peyton Sward scored when Cannon beat out an infield single.

Graduate student Emily Cimino capped the scoring with a massive two-run home run to right field in the seventh inning.

Urban delivered a strong start to earn the victory, allowing a run on five hits over four innings. Sophomore Chloe Hess came on in relief and retired all nine batters she faced, including four strikeouts, to earn the save.

Lehigh had nine hits against the Black Knights, with Cimino going 3-for-4 and Smith and Sward both adding two hits.

In Thursday's first game, Bucknell's MaKenzie Hilling doubled home Haley Speicher for the only run of the game, just two batters into the contest.

For the rest of the contest, Bucknell's Roukey and Lehigh senior Katelyn Young matched zeroes.

The Mountain Hawks had four hits, with their best scoring chance being two-on, one-out in the fifth, but Roukey worked out of the jam to keep Bucknell (19-25) ahead.

Roukey struck out two and did not walk a batter while allowing four hits.

Young settled in after the first two hitters finishing with a line of one run allowed on six hits. She struck out eight and did not walk a batter.
The Boston University-Bucknell game will kick off day two Friday at noon, with Lehigh to face the loser at 2:30 p.m. All Patriot League Tournament action will be broadcast on ESPN+.
