Mountain Hawks Split Season Series With Army West Point In 3-1 Loss

11/8/2024 10:15:00 PM | Volleyball

WEST POINT, N.Y. –  The home stretch of the regular season began on Friday night for Lehigh volleyball as the team looks to make a push for the postseason. The Mountain Hawks faced off against the Army West Point Black Knights on the road, falling in four sets to split the season series.

"Army hit the ball well and we struggled to make some adjustments," said head coach Alexa Keckler. "Tomorrow we will need to be better and I am confident that we can rebound."

Lehigh (14-10, 7-7 PL) started their night off with a win in set one, narrowly defeating Army West Point (12-11, 8-6 PL) 25-23 in the opening frame. The Mountain Hawks had 13 kills on a .267 hitting percentage, which bested the Black Knights' 12 and .219. Neither team managed more than a three-point lead for the whole set, but Lehigh did just enough to earn the first set victory

The Black Knights started strong in the second, beginning the set with a 6-2 lead. Lehigh would work to shorten the gap, but Army West Point led the entire way through. A poor hitting percentage from the Mountain Hawks combined with consistency from the Black Knights allowed them to win set two 25-19.

Army West Point once again won set three by the same score of 25-19. While Lehigh kept the score even through the first ten points, a .281 hitting percentage in the period for the Black Knights helped keep their offense humming. Lehigh held the lead early in set four, but multiple big runs from Army West Point helped them once again win 25-19 and secure their eighth Patriot League win of the year.

Sophomore Alysia Fingall's 12 kills led the Mountain Hawks offensively while junior Natalie Luscomb also reached double-digit kills with 11. Senior Makena Smith led the team with 21 assists while senior libero Kyleigh Brown tallied a team-high 15 digs defensively.

The Mountain Hawks are back in action tomorrow afternoon from Hamilton, N.Y. to take on Colgate University. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. from Cotterell Court.
