EASTON, Pa. – Lehigh men's cross country didn't have to travel far for this year's Patriot League championships, which were hosted at nearby Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks took home fifth place as a team while senior Kevin Harvey earned a spot on the All-Patriot League second team.
"Today, we wanted to try to mix it up," said head coach Todd Etters. "We thought we could be in contention from anywhere from third to seventh. I think the guys did a good job of getting in a good position. I thought the guys raced pretty well from the four mile into the finish, and that last mile was the difference in helping us beat Bucknell, who we hadn't beat in a couple of years. Credit to the guys for fighting all the way through the finish."
Harvey, who entered Saturday's race fresh off of a second-place performance at the IC4A Championships, placed 12th overall with an 8K finish of 24:08.6. It is the first All-Patriot League honor of Harvey's career in cross country.
"He looked like a guy that was on a mission, and today he went out and ran extremely well," said Etters. "For Kevin to get out there and mix it up with the frontrunners, he didn't back down from the challenge and was rewarded for that. I'm really proud of him for what he's been able to do."
Lehigh's second finisher was sophomore Ryan Baker, who has enjoyed a breakout campaign in his second year with the Mountain Hawks. Baker finished in 28th with a time of 24:43.0.
"Ryan stepped up this year big time, and that happened right from the first race," said Etters. "He's kind of proved that sometimes your first year doesn't go the way that you want, but you control your destiny and he flipped the script. I think he's going to have a great career."
Rounding out Lehigh's top five were junior Dan Malatesta (35th, 24:54.7), senior Aidan Lynch (38th, 24:56.3) and sophomore Noah Zahn (44th, 25:07.8).
Other finishers for the Mountain Hawks included junior Connor Malinger (63rd, 25:34.5), first-year Ben Connell (66th, 25:37.6), sophomore Thomas Smigo (71st, 25:44.9), junior Alex Heidemann (76th, 25:50.9), first-year Will Mrozinski (83rd, 26:04.7) and first-year Charlie Butler (96th, 26:53.0).
The team finished in fifth place out of the ten competing Patriot League schools, posting 137 points on the day. Their finish marks the second consecutive season that the Mountain Hawks placed fifth at the event.
Lehigh's next opportunity will come at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional at Penn State University on November 15.
"I think we showed up better today than we had all year," said Etters. "We want to build momentum not just for the regional meet, but also for the program. I think we're turning the corner with some stuff and we hope to keep this momentum going."
