Comeback Effort Comes Up Short In 3-2 Loss To Binghamton On Pride Day

11/13/2024 9:37:00 PM | Volleyball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After clinching a spot in the Patriot League tournament for the first time since 2019, Lehigh volleyball played their final home match of the season on Wednesday evening against the visiting Binghamton Bearcats on Pride Day, presented by the Lehigh University Pride Center and the Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Equity. The Mountain Hawks came back from down two sets to none, but ultimately fell in five sets to the Bearcats.

"The match was hard fought on both ends," said head coach Alexa Keckler. "The team did an excellent job in sets three and four to stop and defend their offense."

Binghamton (18-9, 7-2 America East) was on fire to start the match, hitting .594 in a 25-15 set one win over Lehigh (14-12, 7-8 PL). The Bearcats' hitting percentage cooled off in the second, but Binghamton still managed to take a 19-11 lead in the frame. The Mountain Hawks would come back to pull within two, but Binghamton closed out the set 25-21 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Needing a win to stay alive in the match, Lehigh responded well in the third. The Mountain Hawks hit .281 as opposed to the Bearcats' .057 in the frame, which allowed them to win set three 25-18. Lehigh's momentum continued into the fourth, as the Mountain Hawks opened the set on an 11-1 run. The Mountain Hawks hit an outstanding .407 in a dominant 25-14 fourth set victory to send the match to the fifth.

After hitting well in the previous two sets, Lehigh's offense took a backseat to Binghamton in the fifth, who started the period with a 5-2 lead that they would hold onto the whole way through. A .350 hitting percentage in the fifth helped the Bearcats avoid a reverse sweep and award them their 18th victory of the season.

Three Mountain Hawks reached double-digit kills in the match, those being sophomore Alysia Fingall (12), senior Megan Schulte (11) and senior Emily Stewart (10). Senior Makena Smith led the team with 24 assists while sophomore Abby Felkai added 13. Fingall tallied 13 digs defensively to pace the Mountain Hawks.

Lehigh concludes their regular season schedule on the road on Saturday, November 16 against American. The Mountain Hawks will then travel back to Washington D.C. on Tuesday, November 19 for a Patriot League quarterfinal bout against the Eagles.

"I believe getting to play American back-to-back is a good advantage," said Keckler. "Having to travel there Saturday will hopefully help prepare us for Tuesday."
