WASHINGTON - The Lehigh Mountain Hawks fell 3-0 to American on Friday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
American jumped out on an early 1-0 lead with 9:55 remaining in the first quarter off a penalty corner. The Eagles extended their lead in the second quarter, capitalizing on their third penalty corner to lead 2-0.
With just over four minutes remaining in the first half Lehigh earned a penalty stroke opportunity. Fifth-year Julia Gatelin's attempt was thwarted by American goalkeeper Brynn Underwood as American lead 2-0 heading into the third quarter.
American found its third goal with just over ten minutes remaining in the game, securing the Patriot League victory and at least a share of the Patriot League regular season title.
The Eagles outshot Lehigh 15-6 and out-cornered the Mountain Hawks 9-5.
Senior goalkeeper Jenny Canoni played all 90 minutes in net, making six saves. Underwood earned two saves on the afternoon.
Lehigh (6-8, 1-4 PL) returns home on Sunday to host Columbia for Senior Day at 1 p.m. Gatelein along with seniors Eleni Kountroubis, Guusje Hogendoorn and Canoni will be recognized for their contributions and dedication to the Lehigh field hockey program.
