Lehigh Announces 2024 Softball Schedule
1/4/2024 9:59:00 AM | Softball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With softball season right around the corner, head coach Fran Troyan has announced Lehigh's 2024 schedule. Coming off a 40-win campaign in 2023, the sixth in program history, Troyan has lined up another challenging slate that features 52 games overall, nine games against teams that reached last year's NCAA Tournament, seven against Power 5 opponents and 11 home contests at Leadership Park.
Â
Last year, Lehigh made national headlines with an opening day win over No. 7 Alabama. The Mountain Hawks will return to SEC country to open the 2024 campaign with five games at the Aggie Classic, hosted by Texas A&M Feb. 9-11. Lehigh will open with Tulsa on Feb. 9 before playing two games against host Texas A&M and Valparaiso. The Mountain Hawks are 3-3 all-time versus Texas A&M, having defeated the Aggies twice in the 2006 NCAA Amherst Regional and knocking them out of the 2009 Gainesville Regional.
Â
"We are very excited about our 2024 schedule," Troyan said. "Clearly, having the opportunity to open up against a premier team like Texas A&M will be something our players remember forever, but each of our preseason tournaments will be as challenging. Virginia and James Madison have tremendous pedigrees. We are playing outstanding teams at UC Santa Barbara and Penn State as well. We will preach focusing on the process and not the outcomes, but we intend to compete from the first pitch of the season."
Â
The Aggie Classic will be the first of five multi-team weekend tournaments leading into the start of Patriot League play.
Â
In week two, the Mountain Hawks will travel to Harrisonburg, Va., for the Weiler Orthodontics Invitational, hosted by James Madison Feb. 16-18. Lehigh will face George Mason twice and Villanova once in addition to two games with the host Dukes.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will return to Virginia the following weekend for the Rawlings Classic, hosted by Virginia, Feb. 23-25. Lehigh will play two games against both Iowa State and the host Cavaliers and will also face Delaware.
Â
Lehigh will be off the first weekend of March and then will head west for the start of spring break. The Mountain Hawks will travel to Santa Barbara, Calif., for the UC Santa Barbara Tournament II, Mar. 8-10. Lehigh will play three games against Utah Tech and two against the host Gauchos in the three-team event.
Â
Upon returning east, Lehigh will play its fifth and final preseason tournament, the Penn State Softball Invitational, Mar. 15-17. The Mountain Hawks will play Canisius twice, plus host Penn State, Binghamton and Cornell.
Â
Following a single game at Monmouth on Wednesday, Mar. 20, Lehigh will open its home schedule and Patriot League play by hosting Colgate for three games at Leadership Park Mar. 23-24. The Mountain Hawks will play their first six league games at Leadership Park with three games against Holy Cross (Mar. 30-31) following a Mar. 27 non-league doubleheader at Penn.
Â
Lehigh's first non-league home game will be against regional rival Princeton on Wednesday, Apr. 3. From there Lehigh will hit the road for seven straight games, a three-game league series at Bucknell (Apr. 6-7), a single game at Drexel (Apr. 10), a doubleheader at defending MAAC champion Marist (Apr. 13) and a single game at Villanova (Apr. 17).
Â
The seven-game road trip will be followed by four straight home games to close out the home schedule. Lehigh will welcome Lafayette for three games in the Rivalry presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute, Apr. 20-21. The home schedule concludes with a visit from Saint Joseph's on Apr. 24.
Â
Lehigh's final six regular season games will be played on the road as the Mountain Hawks visit Army West Point in Patriot League action Apr. 27-28 and then close out the regular season with three games at Boston University May 4-5.
Â
The Patriot League Tournament will be played May 9-11 on the home field of the highest seed.
Â
Lehigh went 40-14 in 2023, including a 16-2 Patriot League mark. The Mountain Hawks return six All-Patriot League performers from a season ago, in graduate students Josie Charles and Emily Cimino, seniors Brooke Cannon and Katelyn Young and sophomores Chloe Hess and Sydney Parlett.
