Barton Low Mountain Hawk On Day One Of NCAA Las Vegas Regional

LAS VEGAS – In its first NCAA Regional appearance in 10 years, the Lehigh men's golf team played better as the day progressed as the Mountain Hawks opened action at the Las Vegas Regional Monday at Bear's Best Las Vegas. Four of Lehigh's five players shot even par or lower on the back nine as Lehigh finished with a final total of six over par 294.
 
Senior Sam Barton led the way for the Mountain Hawks, who sit in 14th place after the opening round of play at the three-day regional.
 
Barton shot three under par 69, matching his low round of the season, and sits in a tie for 25th place. He was even through nine holes, including a birdie on the par 3 seventh hole and then played three under par on the backside, making a pair of birdies and an eagle on 17 before bogeying his final hole. Barton was one of four players in the field of 75 to play par 3s in two under par.
 
Patriot League individual champion Daniel Song rebounded from a 39 on the front side to shoot two under 34 on the back nine and finished day one in a tie for 55th place at one over par 73. Song carded two birdies in his round and also made an eagle on the par 5 17th hole. The senior led Lehigh with 12 pars in round one and played the par 5s in four under par.
 
Lehigh's other three competitors: senior David Hurly, junior Edmund Broderick and sophomore Aidan Oehrle all shot 76 and are tied for 69th place.
 
Oehrle was one under par on the back nine with a birdie on 11 and an eagle on the par 5 12th hole. Hurly totaled two birdies in his round and was even on the back side. Broderick matched Barton for the team lead with three birdies.
 
No. 4 Arizona State, the top seed in the region, shot 26 under par 262 to take a six stroke lead over Stanford, while Virginia sits in third place.
 
The individual leader is Preston Summerhays of Arizona State, who shot 10 under par 62 and holds a one stroke lead over Michael Thorbjornsen of Stanford.
 
The Mountain Hawks will play round two of the Las Vegas Regional on Tuesday. Lehigh will once again be paired with 13th-place Kansas City and individuals. Tee times for Lehigh's players will once again begin at 9:20 a.m. PT.
