Lehigh Shuts Out Lafayette 2-0 In Patriot League Opener
3/24/2023 6:23:00 PM | Softball
EASTON, Pa. – Junior Katelyn Young fired her second straight complete-game shutout and junior Brooke Cannon and sophomore Rory Dudley provided the offense as the Lehigh softball team opened Patriot League play with a 2-0 win over Lafayette Friday afternoon at Metzgar Fields.
Young followed her no-hitter on Wednesday with a four-hit shutout Friday, striking out nine Leopards as Lehigh wins its third straight to improve to 20-6 overall.
Cannon opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning when she launched her second home run of the season out to left center.
Lehigh added an insurance run in the top of the seventh as first-year Lily Owens reached on a two-out infield single, stole second and then scored on a base hit to right center by Dudley.
A walk and a double for Lafayette (2-18-1) put the tying runs in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, but Young struck out pinch hitter Bailey Langford and then Kristen Brown to end the threat and the game.
Young improved to 11-3 on the season with her third shutout. She walked one and struck out nine, while scattering four hits.
Lehigh finished with six hits. Owens led the way going 2-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored.
Kailee Sawai took the loss for Lafayette, allowing two runs on five hits in 6.2 innings with four walks and five strikeouts.
The Mountain Hawks and Leopards will wrap-up their league-opening series with a Sunday doubleheader beginning at noon. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
