Young's No-Hitter Lifts Lehigh Past Monmouth in Home Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior Katelyn Young fired Lehigh's first no-hitter in nearly four years as the Mountain Hawks blanked Monmouth 2-0 Wednesday afternoon in their home opener at Leadership Park. Young struck out six and faced one batter over the minimum in her 10th win and second shutout of the season.

Senior Emily Cimino paced the offense going 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored as Lehigh improves to 19-6 on the season.

The lone blemish to Young's ledger came when she hit Emily Churchill leading off the third inning. In addition to the six strikeouts, Young recorded eight fly ball outs and seven ground ball outs. Senior left fielder Josie Charles made a nifty grab on a sinking line drive by Julia Thuer for the first out of the fifth inning.

Lehigh finished with seven hits. The Mountain Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when first-year Lily Owens drew a leadoff walk, took second on a wild pitch, and then scored on a single to right by Cimino. Lehigh doubled its lead in the sixth when Cimino lined a double to center with one out and then scored on a single to left center by sophomore Rory Dudley.

Dudley was 2-for-3 with an RBI while Charles and graduate student Carley Barjaktarovich also added hits for the Mountain Hawks.

Billie Kerwood struck out seven and walked two for Monmouth as the Hawks fell to 3-16 on the season.

The no-hitter is the first for Lehigh since Emily Sorem no-hit Holy Cross over nine innings on April 27, 2019.

Expected inclement weather has forced schedule changes for Lehigh's Patriot League-opening series at Lafayette. The Mountain Hawks and Leopards will now play a single game Friday at 4 p.m. and then will take Saturday off before wrapping up the series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
