Lehigh Earns Six Top-Five Finishes at Penn Challenge to Open Outdoor Track and Field Schedule

PHILADELPHIA — The Lehigh track and field programs opened the 2023 Outdoor Track and Field schedule on Saturday when they competed at the Penn Challenge, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania at Franklin Field.

The Mountain Hawks went up against two Patriot League programs in Army and Bucknell while also competing against Cornell, La Salle, Penn, Penn State, Princeton, Towson, and Villanova.
 
Jumps
In the high jump, sophomore Skyler Mott finished second by clearing 2.05 meters for a personal best while senior Brittann Pierce placed 12th with a height of 1.90 meters and junior Eli Aaronson in 13th at 1.85 meters.

First-year Melanie LaCorte competed in the high jump and placed fourth at a height of 1.60 meters.
 
Mott then claimed second in the triple jump by reaching a PR mark of 13.37 meters and was followed up by first-year Daniel Givens, who finished third at 12.72 meters. Sophomore Mulenga Malama finished third in the long jump with a new personal best of 6.73 meters and Senior Ian Scott recorded a mark of 6.40 meters for ninth.
 
Sophomore Lauren Roy took finished ninth in the triple jump with a PR mark of 10.69 meters and finished in 15th in the long with a jump of 5.10 meters.
 
Sprints
Scott ran a time of 11.67 in the 100-meter dash to finish 10th while sophomore Patrez Thomas also finished 10th in the 200-meter event in a time of 22.66 and senior Jack Bush completed it in 23.65 for 16th. In the 400-meter event, Thomas placed fifth with a time of 49.83 while senior Andrew Roman and Bush turned in times of 51.93 seconds and 53.87 seconds respectively.
 
First-year Sydney Kusner ran a time of 1:03.72 in the 400-meter event for 22nd and classmate Amber Barrios competed in the 400-meter hurdles and finished seventh with a time of 1:07.35.
 
Mid-Distance / Distance
Sophomore Athiel Mading competed in the 800-meter race and finished 11th with a personal best time of 2:28.02 while classmate Riley Morrell ran in the 1,500-meter event, completing the race in 4:55.95 for 14th.
 
Throws
Sophomores Liam Lovering and Greg Stagliano both threw in the discus, with Lovering finishing sixth with a PR mark of 49.44 meters and Stagliano placing 17th reaching 31.95 meters. Lovering then placed ninth in the hammer, recording a PR mark of 48.29 meters while sophomores Ethan McHugh and Sharan Shankar also turned in personal best with McHugh finishing 12th hitting a mark of 40.41 meters and Shankar turning in a mark of 38.14 meters.

Sophomore Hunter Rodarmel opened the outdoor season by competing in the javelin and placing eighth with a PR mark of 55.58 meters while Stagliano finished right behind him in ninth place and a personal best throw of 54.55 meters.

First-year Jen Whipple threw in two events, the discus and the hammer throw. She finished 16th in the hammer throw with a mark of 36.20 meters and then placed 17th in the discus, hitting a mark of 33.08 meters.
 
Lehigh will head to two separate meets next weekend, starting Thursday through Saturday, March 23-25 at the Raleigh Relays hosted by NC State and the Monmouth Spring Opener from Friday to Saturday, March 24-25.
