Eighth-Inning Home Run Lifts Lehigh to Win Over Iona for 11th Straight Victory

3/14/2023 12:13:00 PM | Softball

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Lehigh softball team earned a 4-3 victory over Iona with a two-run eighth-inning home run to extend its winning streak to 11 games at The Spring Games on Tuesday morning.

After a scoreless first inning, the Gaels got on the board in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Mountain Hawks evened things up when senior Emily Cimino blasted a solo home run center field to make the score 1-1 after four innings.

Lehigh took its first lead in the top of the seventh inning on a solo homer coming off the bat of first-year Sydney Parlett, putting the Brown and White in front, 2-1. In the bottom half of the seventh, Iona tied the game at 2-2 and stranded one runner on third base, forcing extra innings.

After graduate student Carley Barjaktarovich bunted the runner over to third to begin the eighth frame, first-year Lily Owens connected on a two-run home run to put Lehigh on top 4-2. The Gaels managed to get one run in the bottom of the eighth, but the Mountain Hawks closed it out for a 4-3 victory and their 11th straight win.

Junior Ansley Dambach got the start in the circle, tossed six innings, gave up two runs, one earned, on six hits and struck out six Gaels. Classmate Katelyn Young threw the last two innings with three strikeouts and held Iona to just one hit with one earned run to earn the win in the decision.

Owens was the only Mountain Hawk to record two hits in the game, going 2-for-4 with her fourth home run of the season, a double and two RBIs. Cimino, Parlett and senior Josie Charles each recorded a hit, with Cimino hitting her fifth season of the year while Parlett hit her first collegiate home run.

Lehigh is back in action tomorrow to finish out The Spring Games with the first game of the day against Chattanooga at 12:30 p.m. and then take on Princeton at 3 p.m. Both games will be streamed on FloSoftball.
