Mountain Hawks Close Out The Spring Games With 5-1 Victory Over Princeton

3/15/2023 7:35:00 PM | Softball

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Lehigh's 11-game winning streak was snapped by Chattanooga Wednesday afternoon, but the Mountain Hawks managed to finish The Spring Games on a high note as Lehigh defeated Princeton 5-1 in its second game of the day.

Senior Emily Cimino opened the scoring against Princeton with her sixth home run of the season as Lehigh scored five times in its first three at-bats. Sophomore Maria Urban was solid in the circle, keeping Princeton off the board until the final inning. Lehigh's bats couldn't get going in its opening game Wednesday against Chattanooga as the Mountain Hawks mustered just five hits in a 3-1 setback.

Wednesday's split leaves Lehigh at 16-3 on the season.

Cimino's home run against Princeton (4-12) was a two-run shot that staked the Mountain Hawks to an early lead. In the second inning, the Mountain Hawks tacked on two more runs behind RBI singles by sophomore Maddy Schmeiser and graduate student Carley Barjaktarovich. Lehigh added a fifth run when Cimino scored on a fly ball to center field in the third inning.

Urban limited the Tiger offense to a run on six hits in a complete-game effort on the way to her second win of the season (2-1). She walked one and struck out three. Serena Starks broke up the shutout bid with an RBI single with two outs in the seventh inning.

Lehigh finished with 10 hits against Princeton. First-year Lily Owens, junior Katelyn Young and senior Josie Charles all registered two.

In Wednesday's first game, defending Southern Conference champion Chattanooga (14-7) got to Young in the top of the first inning as Olivia Lipari doubled home Emily Coltharp.

Adison Keylon added a two-run home run in the fourth inning to put the Mocs up 3-0. Lehigh scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Rory Dudley scored from second after Charles reached on an error.

Lehigh had opportunities in the late innings but the Mountain Hawks were done in by ground ball double plays in both the fifth and sixth innings. Junior Amanda Greaney led off the seventh with a single but pinch runner Lindsey Martin was stranded at first base. Greaney had two of Lehigh's five hits against Chattanooga.

Young (8-1) suffered her first loss of the season, allowing three runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings with a walk and two strikeouts. First-year Chloe Hess walked one and fanned three in 3.2 innings of hitless, scoreless relief.

Lehigh will now head to Tampa for the South Florida Showdown, hosted by USF Friday through Sunday. The Mountain Hawks will face Iowa (11:30 a.m.) and host USF (4:30 p.m.) on Friday; Marist (9 a.m.) and No. 9/11 Texas (2 p.m.) on Saturday; and Marist a second time Sunday at 10 a.m. The USF game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
