NORFOLK, Va. – Trailing Georgetown 5-1 after two and a half innings, the Lehigh softball team kept battling. The Mountain Hawks tied the game in the sixth and after five scoreless extra innings the Hoyas pulled back in front 6-5 in the 13th. Lehigh did not flinch. Senior Emily Cimino doubled home first-year Lily Owens with the tying run and then scored the winning run on sophomore Rory Dudley's RBI single as Lehigh claimed a 7-6 victory in 13 innings Sunday afternoon.
Â
Cimino had three hits, including a three-run home run, and four RBIs overall in the victory. The Mountain Hawks had to settle for a Sunday split however, as Wagner scored twice in the first to hold off Lehigh 2-1 in Sunday morning's first game.
Â
Lehigh sits at 5-2 after two weekends of play in 2023.
Â
The Mountain Hawks scored first against Georgetown with first-year Sydney Parlett singling home Cimino in the bottom of the first.
Â
Georgetown (2-4) answered with a single run in the second and then scored four runs in the third to take a 5-1 lead, chasing junior Katelyn Young from the game.
Â
Cimino jump-started the comeback with a three-run home run to left center, her second of the season, in the fourth inning. Two innings later, junior Amanda Greaney singled home classmate Brooke Cannon with the tying run.
Â
With neither team able to score in the seventh inning, the game went into extra innings. The eighth and ninth innings were played normally with the international tiebreaker implemented in the 10th. Lehigh advanced the winning run to third base in the 10th, 11th and 12th innings but could not push her across.
Â
A sacrifice fly by Mae Forshey put Georgetown up 6-5 going into the bottom of the 13th. With first-year Lily Owens placed on second, Cimino laced a game-tying double to right field, bringing Owens home with the tying run. Two batters later, Dudley hit a 2-0 pitch into left for the game-winning hit.
Â
Cimino went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Senior Josie Charles also registered three hits, as the Mountain Hawks finished the game with 13.
Â
Young re-entered in the ninth and ended up earning the victory (3-0). She finished with a line of six runs (two earned) six hits, with three strikeouts and no walks. In between, first-year Chloe Hess and sophomore Maria Urban contributed six innings of scoreless relief. Lehigh pitchers threw nine consecutive scoreless innings from the fourth through the 12th.
Â
Georgetown had 15 hits and the Hoyas capitalized on four Lehigh errors, but the Mountain Hawks earned the win to come away with the Sunday and tournament split.
Â
In Sunday's first game, Wagner (1-2) got to Urban for two runs in the first inning on a walk, an error, a single and a double steal. Cimino and Barjaktarovich executed a double steal in the bottom of the first, with Barjaktarovich stealing home for Lehigh's only run of the game.
Â
The Mountain Hawks out-hit the Seahawks 6-3 but couldn't push across the tying run. Sophomore Maddy Schmeiser was the lone Lehigh player to reach base twice, doing so with a second inning single and fifth inning walk.
Â
Urban settled in after the rocky start to allow just one earned run on three hits in seven innings. She struck out two and walked just one.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will be off next weekend and will head to Campbell's Camel Invitational March 3-5 in Buies Creek, N.C.
