Three Mountain Hawks Win Titles At Sheridan Tournament

12/22/2023 5:13:00 PM | Men's Wrestling

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Three Lehigh wrestlers won individual titles as the Mountain Hawks hosted the Sheridan Tournament, presented by Joshi Hotel Group Friday at Stabler Arena. The Lehigh trio of Sheldon Seymour (125), Max Brignola (157) and Nathan Taylor (285) came out on top of their respective weight classes. In all, the Mountain Hawks had six finalists on the day and placed 10 wrestlers in the top four in their respective weights.

A total of 23 wrestlers competed in a field that also featured wrestlers from Army West Point, Binghamton, Brown, Central Michigan, Cornell, Franklin & Marshall, Indiana, Rider and Rutgers.

Seymour went 3-0 at 125, opening with a technical fall win over Central Michigan's Wyatt Skebba and a 6-3 finals decision over Blaine Frazier of Indiana. He also blanked Brandon Chletsos of Rutgers 5-0 in the semifinals.
Brignola needed four bouts to clinch the title at 157. He posted major decisions in the first round and the semifinals and then battled back after giving up the first takedown to win an 8-5 decision over Central Michigan's Johnny Lovett in the finals. Tied 5-5 late in the third, Brignola got a hold of Lovett's lower leg and after a struggle on the edge, secured the second ankle as time expired.
Taylor went 3-0 with three bonus point wins to win at 285. After opening with a quarterfinal major decision and a semifinal technical fall, Taylor faced David Szuba of Rider in the finals. Szuba led 3-1 after one but in the second, Taylor was able to put the Bronc on his back during a scramble and secured the fall at 4:22.
Lehigh's three other finalists were juniors Malyke Hines (141) and Drew Munch (149) and sophomore JT Davis (197).

In his first action since Nov. 12, Hines won his first three bouts by decision, before running into Rutgers' Mitch Moore, who claimed a 12-4 major decision in the finals.

Munch had three wins, including a first round technical fall and a semifinal win over teammate Owen Reinsel, but came up on the short end of an 8-1 score against Corbyn Munson of Central Michigan in the finals.

After beginning the season at 184, Davis bumped up to 197, winning his first two bouts by decision. In the finals, Davis scored the first takedown against Binghamton's Lou DePrez, before the Bearcat All-American rallied for a 9-3 victory.

Lehigh's third place finishers included sophomores Carter Bailey (141) and Jack Wilt (184) and deferred first-year Kelvin Griffin.

Bailey went 5-1 with the only loss coming against Moore in the quarterfinals. Wilt won three straight after a quarterfinal loss and avenged that loss to Indiana's Roman Rogetzke with a 10-7 decision in the third place bout. Griffin went 4-1 Friday with three pins, including a first-period fall in the consolation semifinals against No. 14 Graham Rooks of Indiana. Griffin was the second Lehigh wrestler to knock off Rooks on Friday. Deferred first-year Owen Reinsel beat Rooks 9-3 in the quarterfinals.

Junior TJ Moore went 3-2 with a fall to claim fourth place at 285 as Lehigh's 10th place winner.

Seventeen of Lehigh's 23 entrants won at least one bout on Friday. Twelve Mountain Hawks had at least one bonus point victory.
