11/7/2023 1:16:00 PM | Football

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh takes to the road for the final time in 2023 as the Mountain Hawks visit Colgate Saturday at Andy Kerr Stadium in Hamilton, N.Y. The Mountain Hawks battled four-time defending champion Holy Cross to the wire, ultimately coming up on the short end of a 28-24 score. Sophomore Brayten Silbor and senior Eric Johnson connected on a pair of early touchdown passes as Lehigh took an early 14-0 lead. The Mountain Hawks won the turnover battle behind a season-best three takeaways, but Holy Cross scored 21 second quarter points and added the go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter, while limiting Lehigh to just a field goal after halftime. Colgate moved to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the league after rallying from 17-0 down to upset No. 16 Lafayette 37-34 in overtime.

Sophomore safety Nick Peltekian continues to produce strong performances both on defense and special teams for the Mountain Hawks. Peltekian had a game-high 10 tackles against Holy Cross and returned a pair of punts for 56 yards, including a 41-yarder early in the fourth quarter. Heading into Lehigh's bye, Peltekian had 13 tackles, including three tackles for loss against Georgetown and added seven tackles and two pass breakups at Bucknell.

Lehigh's depth received a boost with seven players returning from injury-related absence coming out of the bye against Holy Cross. Wide receiver Geoffrey Jamiel and defensive linemen TJ Burke and Andrew Sharga returned after missing the Bucknell win. Prior to last week, safety Logan Jones last played at Monmouth. Running back Gaige Garcia played for the first time since the Dartmouth game and defensive backs Jordan Adderley and Andrew Worthy played for the first time since the Merrimack and Villanova games, respectively.

With the 159th edition of college football's most-played rivalry on the horizon, Lehigh will look to continue its run of success in the game prior to the Lafayette game. The Mountain Hawks have won 15 of their last 20 games the week prior to the Rivalry, including victories over Georgetown in 2021 and Colgate last year. During that span, Lehigh is 3-3 versus Colgate the week before the Rivalry, with wins in 2013, 2014 and 2022, and losses in 2012, 2015 and 2018.

Colgate brings a 4-5 overall mark and 2-2 league mark into Saturday's game. The Raiders started the season 0-4 but have since won four of their last five games, including a come-from-behind 37-34 overtime win at Lafayette last week which was the Leopards' first Patriot League loss.  Colgate overcame a 17-0 halftime deficit to win last week. First-year Jake Stearney came in at quarterback to engineer the comeback win after Michael Brescia departed with an injury. Zach Osborne has also appeared in seven games at quarterback. First-year Chris Gee is the top rusher, while sophomore Treyvhon Saunders leads the Raiders in receiving. Linebacker Tyler Flick is the Raiders' top tackler, while safety Owen Goss blocked three kicks in one game against Bucknell, Colgate's lone loss in its last five outings.

Lehigh meets Colgate for the 61st time with the Raiders holding a 31-27 lead.  There have also been two ties. Lehigh has won eight of the last 12 meetings, but Colgate's wins in 2012 and 2015 clinched Patriot League titles for the Raiders. The Mountain Hawks have won in four of their last six visits to Hamilton, N.Y.
