WORCESTER, Mass. – Lehigh volleyball competed in their first match of a back-to-back road swing on Friday night, heading to Massachusetts to take on the Holy Cross Crusaders. The Mountain Hawks fell to the Crusaders 3-1 in a rematch of Lehigh's victory on September 16.
Lehigh (11-10, 3-7 PL) and Holy Cross (4-15, 1-9 PL) met earlier this season in Bethlehem in a match that saw the Mountain Hawks win 3-0. Friday's match appeared to be going in the opposite direction for Lehigh, as the Crusaders picked up victories in both sets one and two. Attack errors proved to be the difference in set one, as Lehigh committed seven, three fewer than Holy Cross. The Crusaders rode their .467 hitting percentage in the second set to their 2-0 lead.
With their backs against the wall, the Mountain Hawks needed to deliver in the third to keep their hopes alive. Lehigh did just that, picking up a 25-20 win in set three. The Mountain Hawks won the first five points in a row to begin the frame and didn't look back. Lehigh's win in set three gave them a chance to push the match to a fifth set, which would've been their second consecutive match doing so. However, Holy Cross battled tooth and nail to a narrow 25-23 fourth set win, clinching the first league win of the season for the Crusaders.
Junior Emily Stewart led Lehigh with 11 kills and six blocks in Friday night's match. Junior Makena Smith's 33 assists were a team-high and junior Kyleigh Brown once again led the team in digs with 23.
Lehigh will finish their road trip tomorrow against the Patriot League-leading Colgate Raiders. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. from Hamilton, N.Y.
