BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh closed out the regular season by winning two of three games at Boston University and the Mountain Hawks return to Boston for the 2022 Patriot League Tournament, beginning Thursday. The Mountain Hawks won all six of their Patriot League series to finish the regular season at 26-17-1 overall and 15-3 in the league. Last weekend, Lehigh snapped Boston University's 27-game winning streak, 33-game league winning streak and 25-game home winning streak with a 3-0 victory in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. Lehigh then won the series finale 5-2 on Sunday.

The Terriers have hosted and won the last three tournaments. The Mountain Hawks have won a league-best 14 tournament titles, most recently in 2017, and reached the finals in the last three tournaments.  Lehigh had five All-Patriot League selections, including first teamers Carley Barjaktarovich, Jaelynn Chesson and Addie Kittel. The second seeded Mountain Hawks will open the double elimination tournament against No. 3 seed Army West Point. No. 4 seed Colgate will open the tournament against host and top seed Boston U.

Five Mountain Hawks were recognized as the Patriot League announced its postseason awards earlier this week. Senior shortstop Carley Barjaktarovich collected a major award as she was named Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Barjaktarovich boasts a .974 fielding percentage and made 39 putouts and 74 assists during the regular season. She also garnered first team All-Patriot League honors along with outfielder Jaelynn Chesson and designated player Addie Kittel. Chesson is now a three-time first-team All-Patriot League selection, while Barjaktarovich is a two-time all-league honoree. Senior infielder Karsen O'Rourke and junior outfielder Emily Cimino were named to the second team. O'Rourke earned second team all-league honors for the second consecutive season.

In four seasons, seniors Jaelynn Chesson and Carley Barjaktarovich have been impact players for the Mountain Hawks in very different ways. Chesson has established herself as one of the top power hitters and run producers in program history, while Barjaktarovich has been the top table-setter with speed and an ability to get on base, along with excellent defense at shortstop.

Earlier this season, Chesson hit her 29th career home run, breaking the school record of 28 held by Morgan Decker '16. Chesson is up to 32 home runs, including 12 in her senior campaign, one off the school single season mark. Last year, Chesson drove in 50 runs in just 34 games and ranked in the top five nationally in doubles per game (0.47) and runs batted in per game (1.47).

On the other side, Barjaktarovich has 112 hits, 69 runs scored and 42 stolen bases over the last two seasons, with many of those hits not making it out of the infield. Barjaktarovich's .471 batting average in 2021 was the second-highest single season average in school history. She hit .453 in 18 league games this season to raise her average to a team-leading .393. Chesson is a three-time first-team all-league honoree, while Barjaktarovich is a two-time all-league performer who was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year in each of the last two seasons.

Lehigh and Army West Point will meet in Thursday's second game set for 2:30 p.m. The Mountain Hawks and Black Knights will meet in the postseason for the first time since 2018, when Lehigh eliminated Army 3-0 in game four. This year, Lehigh won two of the three games played at West Point, taking the series opener 6-1 on March 26. Game two was suspended due to weather with Lehigh leading 4-3 and the Mountain Hawks eventually won the resumption of the suspended game 6-4 on April 19 before dropping the series finale 8-0.

No. 3 seed  Army West Point finished the regular season at 20-32 overall and 10-8 in the league. Last weekend the Black Knights won two out of three games at Colgate to lock up third place in the standings. Army had four All-Patriot League selections. Catcher Maddie Wilkes and outfielder Kayla Edwards were named to the first team, while first baseman Leila Hurst and pitcher Jolie Duong earned second team honors.

Thursday's other first round game matches No. 1 Boston University and No. 4 Colgate. The Terriers boast the league's Player of the Year in shortstop Kayla Roncin and the Pitcher of the Year in Allison Boaz. BU is 38-15 overall and went 16-2 in the league with the only two losses coming against Lehigh last weekend. Colgate is 19-26 overall and 9-9 in the league. The Raiders feature the Patriot League Rookie of the Year in Jillian Herbst. Lehigh also took two of three from Colgate in the next to last weekend of the regular season.

The Patriot League tournament gets underway Thursday with the Boston University-Colgate game at 12 p.m., with Lehigh and Army to square off at approximately 2:30 p.m. Three games are slated for Friday with the winner's bracket game scheduled for 11 a.m. and elimination games scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. The championship round featuring game six and, if necessary, game seven is set for noon on Saturday.
