Mountain Hawks to Open Home Slate, 11-Game Homestand Versus Rival Lafayette

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team will kick off its home schedule with an 11-game homestand, beginning this weekend at Leadership Park as the Mountain Hawks host Lafayette in The Rivalry, presented by Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute. The Mountain Hawks swept a doubleheader at Penn Wednesday and will go into the highly anticipated weekend matchup riding a five-game win streak.Â
Saturday's games will be a doubleheader with game one starting at noon. Sunday's game starts at noon and all three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.Â
Lehigh stands at 10-11 for the season with a 1-0 record in Patriot League play. The two-game sweep against Penn at Penn Park featured an offensive explosion with Lehigh winning 9-6 in game one and 15-1 victory in a five-inning game two. Senior Jaelynn Chesson led the Mountain Hawk offense going 5-for-6 for the day with three home runs and nine RBIs. A two-run bomb out to right-center in game two gave Chesson her third home run of the day to put her at 28 for her career, tying Morgan Decker's '16 school record for career home runs. Seniors Addie Kittel and Karsen O'Rourke both added home runs in a nine-run outburst in the second inning of the second game.Â
First-year Maria Urban earned her first career win in game one. Senior Gabriella Nori was credited with the victory in game two after allowing one run on two hits over the first two innings. Sophomore Katelyn Young followed by pitching three scoreless innings allowing just two hits and five strikeouts.Â
Lafayette stands at 5-20 for the season and is heading into the weekend with a 12-game losing streak. The Leopards offense is led by Junior Grace Harvey who holds a .286 batting average with 20 hits and 16 RBIs. Senior Natasha Miner has added 18 hits and has scored a team-high 16 runs for Lafayette. Senior Kinzi Van Wyk leads the Leopard pitching rotation with a 3.33 ERA and a 4-6 record. Van Wyk has struck out a team-high 27 batters.Â
Lehigh leads in The Rivalry against Lafayette 104-24 with the first meeting coming back in 1977. The Mountain Hawks have won the last ten matchups against the Leopards with the most recent being a four-game sweep in 2021 where Lehigh outscored Lafayette 33-3 over the series. The Mountain Hawks are 53-3 at home against the Leopards, dating back to 1991.Â
After the series against Lafayette, Lehigh will continue their homestand with a single against Delaware on Wednesday with the first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. The Mountain Hawks will then continue Patriot League play with three games against Holy Cross April 9-10.
