Two-Run Fourth Helps Lehigh Battle Back to Top Fairfield, 3-2

RALEIGH, N.C. – Scoring two runs in the fourth inning to take the lead, the Lehigh softball team battled back from a deficit for the second day in a row to beat Fairfield, 3-2 Sunday morning at Dail Stadium to conclude the Wolfpack Classic. The Mountain Hawks (2-3) salvage a win in the weekend finale, earning their second victory of the 2022 campaign so far.
Â
Three Mountain Hawks had multi-hit games in junior Emily Cimino (2-for-3) and first-year Rory Dudley (2-for-3), while junior Josie Charles went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored in the win.
Â
Lehigh's defense was excellent Sunday without committing an error, while sophomore left-hander Katelyn Young struck out six, allowing just two earned runs on four hits in seven innings.
Â
"We were really pleased in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings that Katelyn (Young) went through those without any free passes," said head coach Fran Troyan. "Hopefully that becomes a sign that she is making some really great strides in that regard, because she has the ability to move the ball around a little bit and has the ability to make our opponents earn things.
Â
"We manufactured some runs as well. We played a fairly clean game, we had some timely hitting and we were able to close the game out against a team that was picked second in their conference. It was a great win for us and we were grateful just to be out on the dirt, to be able to play in good weather. It's going to be a process for us, we have some young players that are really coming together right now."
Â
Fairfield struck first in the bottom of the second inning after Young's wild pitch brought home a run and advanced another runner over to third base.
Â
The Mountain Hawks struck back and got level in the top of the third inning when Karsen O'Rourke reached on a fielder's choice to the catcher, scoring Charles to even the game at 1-1.
Â
The difference in the game came in the fourth inning when Lehigh scored twice on an RBI-groundout from Hanna Aldrich and an Addie Kittel sacrifice fly.
Â
The Stags got a run back in the bottom of the fifth, an RBI double to center field after Young made two outs on swinging strikeouts.
Â
Young battled in the final two frames, a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth and a clean inning minus a two-out walk in the seventh, as Lehigh held on for the 3-2 win.
Â
"We feel like we have a pretty strong defense and that was evident today," Troyan said. "If we can make our opponents earn things, we can make most of the plays we have to make. We came out of the weekend with some things to work on defensively, but we're doing some pretty good things as well."
Â
Fairfield was led offensively by Madison Robicheau, who went 2-for-3 with a walk, while Allie Bridgman was charged with the loss, tossing 3.2 innings, allowing the three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.
Â
The Mountain Hawks get a week off to prepare for the Liberty Invitational Mar. 4-6, taking on Liberty in the opener Friday at 4:30 p.m., then facing Rutgers and George Washington on Saturday, Notre Dame and James Madison to close the tournament on Sunday.
