ITHACA, N.Y. – In a tightly-contested game that wasn't decided until the final minute, the Lehigh football team came up on the short end of a 19-15 decision at Cornell Saturday at Schoellkopf Field. The Mountain Hawks led 15-10 at halftime, but Cornell's Connor Henderson scored the only touchdown of the second half on a 31-yard interception return. Lehigh had a chance to drive and win the game with just over four minutes to play, but the Mountain Hawks' final drive stalled at the Cornell 12 yard line with 36 seconds to play.
Â
Sophomore Gaige Garcia paced the Lehigh offense with 25 rushes for 162 yards and a touchdown. He also broke off an 82-yard run which set up the third of a career high-tying three field goals by senior Dylan Van Dusen.
Â
The loss drops Lehigh to 1-6, while Cornell improves to 3-2.
Â
Lehigh received the opening kickoff and put together a 17-play drive that milked more than eight minutes off the clock. The drive stalled inside the Big Red 10 yard line and Van Dusen kicked a 26-yard field goal to give the Mountain Hawks an early 3-0 lead.
Â
The defense came up with a big play on Cornell's first play from scrimmage as senior TyGee Leach came through with a sack and forced fumble, which senior Nate Norris recovered and returned to the Cornell 15. Lehigh again had to settle for a field goal and Van Dusen hit from 21 to put the Mountain Hawks up 6-0.
Â
Cornell answered with a seven-play, 61-yard drive and took a 7-6 lead on a 10-yard rush by quarterback Jameson Wang. The Big Red added a Jackson Kennedy field goal to go up 10-6 with 4:36 left in the half.
Â
On Lehigh's next drive, Garcia broke free for 82 yards, Lehigh's longest play from scrimmage this season. The Mountain Hawks couldn't punch the ball in from the Cornell five yard line, so Van Dusen came on to kick a 20 yard field goal to bring Lehigh within one at 10-9. Â
Cornell's next drive ended after just two plays as Norris stripped Nicholas Laboy after a reception, and junior Donovan Lassiter recovered.
Â
A 25-yard completion from junior Dante Perri to classmate Roemello Miner, plus a personal foul against Cornell, moved the ball to the Big Red 13. Garcia scored on the very next play to give Lehigh a 15-10 lead at halftime.
Â
Cornell opened the second half with a 15-play drive but came away with no points as Kennedy hit the left upright on a 43-yard field goal.
Â
Henderson picked off Perri on the second play of Lehigh's next drive and returned the interception 31 yards for the go-ahead score. Cornell went on to miss the two point conversion and also missed a short field goal, but the Big Red took a 16-15 lead into the fourth.
Â
Lehigh opened the final period with a 16-play drive but Van Dusen's 39-yard attempt at a go-ahead field goal was partially deflected and no good. Cornell answered with a 41-yard Kennedy field goal to go back up by four.
Â
A pair of Cornell personal fouls helped Lehigh move into Big Red territory on the final drive of the game. Perri hit junior Eric Johnson for eight yards on third and eight to give Lehigh 1st and 10 at the Cornell 18. Perri rushed for six yards on second down but his third and fourth down passes fell incomplete.
