Mountain Hawks Head to Boston University to Face Terriers Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Fresh off a big road win at Navy Wednesday night, the Lehigh men's basketball team remains on the road Saturday at Boston University. The Mountain Hawks already own wins against the preseason No. 2 (Colgate) and No. 3 (Navy) teams, and will face preseason No. 1 BU Saturday. Lehigh is one of five teams at 5-2 in Patriot League play (along with Loyola, Navy and Army West Point), with Colgate coming in at 3-1.

On Wednesday night, the Mountain Hawks used a 27-10 run bridging the first and second halves to turn a four-point deficit into a 13-point lead, on the way to handing Navy just its sixth overall loss of the season (the Mids are now 12-6 overall). Junior Evan Taylor led the offense with 21 points - his third straight game with 20+ points. He became the first Mountain Hawk to do that since Jordan Cohen in 2019 and first since Tim Kempton in 2017 to do so in three straight Patriot League games. Over his last three games, Taylor is averaging 20.6 points while shooting 63.6 percent from the floor. Taylor scored 14 first-half points Wednesday, the third time in five halves with exactly 14 points.

Senior Jeameril Wilson finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds - good for his first double-double this season, third of his career and first since the end of his sophomore season. First year Keith Higgins Jr. added 14 points, a career-high seven rebounds and two assists while classmate Tyler Whitney-Sidney tied a career-high 11 points - and provided tremendous defense. He also grabbed two big rebounds in the final 1:05 to help seal the win.

With the win, Lehigh improved to 5-2 after seven Patriot League games for the second time in the last four seasons (also 2018-19). With three wins in their last four road games, it marked the Mountain Hawks' best road stretch since January-February of 2019. On Wednesday, Lehigh connected on 50.0 percent of its 3-pointers (7-of-14) - the second time in three games (and second straight road game) at 50 percent or higher (after connecting on 18-of-34 at Bucknell the previous Wednesday). The Mountain Hawks faced the Patriot League's No. 1 scoring defense on Wednesday (and will face the No. 2 scoring defense in BU Saturday).

Saturday will mark a rematch of last season's Patriot League Tournament First Round game in Boston, which the Terriers won, 69-58.

Boston University owned a 9-5 record entering Patriot League play, but has struggled a bit to start the league slate - going 3-4. The Terriers beat Bucknell to open the league schedule before falling to Navy and Loyola, beating American, falling to Army and Navy, then topping Loyola on the road Wednesday night. Boston U. features a veteran lineup, starting two graduate students and three seniors last time out. Javante McCoy is the preseason Patriot League Player of the Year while Walter Whyte was also named preseason All-League. McCoy is currently fourth in the league in scoring - averaging 16.7 points per game. Big man Sukhmail Mathon is seventh in scoring (14.5) and first in rebounding (10.1). Whyte would also be 11th in the league in scoring (13.1), but doesn't have enough games to qualify (having played just 12 of BU's 20 contests thus far). As a team, the Terriers stand fifth in the Patriot League in scoring offense (68.3) and second in scoring defense (64.6).

Boston University won the last meeting, 69-58, coming in last season's Patriot League Tournament First Round. That gave the Terriers a 10-8 lead in the all-time series. Despite that, Lehigh has won three of the last five and five of the last eight in the series. In the last regular season meeting (Feb. 26, 2020), the Mountain Hawks picked up a hard-fought 57-55 overtime win at home - handing Boston University what proved to be its final defeat of the season. The year prior (2018-19), the Mountain Hawks won both meetings against the Terriers for the first time since they joined the Patriot League for the 2013-14 campaign. The teams have played in three of the last five Patriot League Tournaments (2017, 2018 and 2021). Boston U. won the first-ever meeting between the two sides in 1968-69 by an 81-56 final. It marked the only meeting between the two schools before the Patriot League era.
