Lehigh Returns Home To Host Yale On Tackle Cancer Day, Presented by Red Robin In Partnership With LLS

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – It's back to Goodman Stadium and back to Ivy League opposition for the Mountain Hawks, who welcome the Yale Bulldogs to Goodman Stadium Saturday on Tackle Cancer Day, presented by Red Robin in partnership with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Lehigh is looking to bounce back from an 0-4 start and snap its longest losing streak in more than 75 years. A sluggish start doomed Lehigh in its Patriot League opener at Colgate as the Raiders raced to a 14-0 first quarter lead on the way to a 30-3 victory. Yale captured an Ivy League title in 2019 and comes in at 1-1 after winning its Ivy opener against Cornell last week.

Goodman Stadium is open at 100 percent capacity this fall. Portions of sections WR (Lehigh sideline) and ER (visiting team sideline) will be held for fans who desire physically-distanced seating, and will be marked by signs in those sections.

In recognition of competition between Lehigh (founded 1865) and Yale (founded 1701), the lifetime achievements of their graduates, and the generations of families that have attended both universities, the Yank Townsend Trophy is presented to the winner of the Lehigh - Yale football game.  Charles Frederick Townsend was the only student from Connecticut to enter the Lehigh Class of 1895, earning the nickname "Yank" He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in architecture and engineering, operated his own firm, Norton & Townsend from 1911-1960, and designed a number of bank buildings and colonial residences.  Yank Townsend (1873-1963) was a devotee of Lehigh and Yale athletics, and today a trophy bearing his name is presented to the winner for the eighth time. Yale initially won the trophy in 2006 and successfully retained it twice, before Lehigh captured the trophy for the first time in 2011 and reclaimed it in 2016. The Bulldogs won the most recent meeting in 2017.

Four different quarterbacks have seen time at quarterback for the Mountain Hawks so far this season. Junior Cross Wilkinson started all three games during the spring and the first three games this fall. The Toledo transfer's Lehigh career has been highlighted by a 21-for-34, 177 yard, one touchdown effort at Lafayette back in April. Sophomore Dante Perri saw his first career action against Villanova and made his first career start at Colgate, completing 68 percent of his passes against the Raiders. Junior Nigel Summerville got into two games during the spring season and was slated for a larger role at Colgate but was limited to one series after leaving the game due to injury.

Lehigh has had success getting to opposing quarterbacks in its first four games this season. The Mountain Hawks have nine sacks through four games, putting them second to only Holy Cross for the Patriot League lead. Lehigh had three sacks against Princeton and has had two in each of its other three games. Juniors Mikhari Sibblis and Stephon Bland and sophomore Trevor Harris are all tied for the team lead with two sacks apiece. Bland and Harris have notched sacks in each of Lehigh's last two games.

Yale plays its first road game of 2021 after going 1-1 in its first two contests. The Bulldogs opened their season with a 20-17 loss to Holy Cross but bounced back with a 23-17 victory over Cornell in their Ivy League opener. Yale went 9-1 in 2019, sharing the Ivy League title with Dartmouth, but the Ivy League did not participate in athletic competition during the 2020-21 school year. The Bulldogs were picked second in the Ivy League preseason poll, behind Princeton. Offensively, Yale returns leading rusher Zane Dudek from 2019, who has picked up where he left off with 126 rushing yards in two games. Griffin O'Connor, the 2018 Ivy League Rookie of the Year takes over as the Bulldogs' starting quarterback. Team captain John Dean anchors the defense and has 16 tackles and two tackles for loss in two games.

Lehigh and Yale have met 25 previous times with the Bulldogs leading the series 18-7. This series has been highlighted by streaks, as Yale won the first 12 meetings and then the Mountain Hawks won the next five. Yale has now won six of the last eight meetings in the series, including three of their last four visits to Goodman Stadium (2017, 2015 and 2009). Tom Gilmore went 1-3 against Yale as head coach at Holy Cross.

Saturday's game kicks off just after noon from Goodman Stadium. Tickets can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or by calling 610-7LU-GAME during business hours.

Lehigh will face its third Ivy League opponent this season and will play its final non-league game of the regular season next Saturday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Penn. The two teams have split four games since the series resumed in 2015 following a 12-year hiatus. Game time is set for 1 p.m. from historic Franklin Field as Tom Gilmore faced his alma mater for the first time as a head coach.
