Lehigh Drops Pair to Boston U. in Home, Patriot League Opener

3/27/2021 5:30:00 PM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Playing at Leadership Park for the first time since April 20, 2019, the Lehigh softball team dropped a pair of games to Boston University Saturday in the Patriot League opening doubleheader for both teams. The Terriers claimed a 16-0, five-inning victory in game one, while game two was much tighter. Boston University manufactured a run in the top of the first inning, which stood up as the two-time defending league champions took the nightcap 1-0.

Lehigh recorded two hits in each game with sophomore Emily Cimino recording one in each, but the Mountain Hawks squandered opportunities in the nightcap, failing to capitalize on four BU errors while leaving three runners on base.

The losses drop Lehigh to 2-8 on the season, while Boston University improves to 13-1.

Game one saw Boston U. score five runs in the first inning, nine in the second and two more in the third. The first four hitters in the Terrier lineup combined for eight hits, 10 runs scored and eight RBIs. Lauren Keleher went 2-for-2 with two runs and a team-best three driven in.

Freshman Katelyn Young was charged with 10 runs in the first inning-plus of the game, but re-entered to keep BU off the scoreboard in its final two times at bat. She struck out one, walked five and allowed six hits.

On the other end, Boston University's Ali DuBois held Lehigh to two hits over four innings with no strikeouts and two walks. Singles by junior Carley Barjaktarovich and Cimino in the fourth inning accounted for Lehigh's only base-runners in game one.

The only run of game two came in the top of the first as Cait Coker led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Aliyah Huerta-Leipner.

Lehigh had base-runners in each of the first four innings, including the leadoff batter in three of the four, but had two runners thrown out stealing and had a fourth-inning rally erased by a double play.

Sophomore Josie Charles singled in the third and Cimino led off the seventh with a single for Lehigh's two hits, but the Mountain Hawks left the tying run at first base in the final frame.

Junior Gabriella Nori pitched well in her first appearance since March 14 as she allowed a run on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts

Allison Boaz threw the complete-game two-hitter for the Terriers with a walk and five strikoeuts.

Sunday's scheduled doubleheader has been postponed due to expected inclement weather in the Lehigh Valley. Makeup information will be determined at a later date.

Lehigh will play Army West Point in a four-game series next weekend. The Mountain Hawks and Black Knights will play a doubleheader Saturday at Leadership Park, beginning at noon, followed by a Sunday doubleheader at West Point, N.Y.
