Game Two Triumph Gives Lehigh Saturday Split With Army West Point

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Powered by a six-run second inning, the Lehigh softball team defeated Army West Point 8-3 Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader at Leadership Park. The Mountain Hawks fell behind 1-0 then scored six runs in the second inning and two more in the fourth on their way to their first league victory. The win snapped a nine-game losing streak after Lehigh was edged 4-2 in game one.
The Saturday split leaves Lehigh at 3-9 overall and 1-3 in the Patriot League this season. Army was opening its league schedule on Saturday and stands at 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Four Mountain Hawks recorded three hits over the two games Saturday, including junior Jaelynn Chesson, who had three hits and three RBIs. Classmate Karsen O'Rourke drove in a pair.
Megan Muffett put the visitors on the scoreboard in game two with a solo home run in the top of the second inning before Lehigh's bats came to life in the bottom of the frame.
Chesson led off the frame by reaching on an error and came around to score on a single down the left field line by O'Rourke. Back-to-back singles by freshman Amanda Greaney and senior Payton Alsobrooks brought home two more runs to give Lehigh a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Emily Cimino drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home a fourth walk and then Chesson capped the six-run frame with a two-run single.
Greaney led off the fourth with a double and scored when sophomore Josie Charles reached on an error. Chesson added a run-scoring ground out to give Lehigh an 8-1 lead after four innings.
Freshman Katelyn Young pitched well, limiting the Black Knights to just the one run through the first six innings. An error led to two unearned runs for Army in the seventh, but Young got Leila Hurst to ground into a force play to end the game. Young's final line was three runs (one earned) on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts. She is now 2-4 on the season.
Lehigh had nine hits off of two Army pitchers. Greaney and Charles led the way with two hits apiece.
Things started well for Lehigh in game one but the Mountain Hawks were ultimately done in by a pair of home runs and were unable to capitalize on their opportunities.
Junior Carley Barjaktarovich led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored on a Charles single, but Lehigh was only able to plate one run despite four hits in the frame.
Jolie Duong's RBI double tied the game at 1-1 in the third and Army took a 3-1 lead on Taylor Drayton's two run home run in the fifth.
Lehigh pulled within a run in the bottom of the fifth as Chesson doubled with one out and then O'Rourke doubled her home two batters later.
Angelina Bebek homered for Army in the top of the seventh to put the Black Knights up 4-2. Lehigh threatened in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases with one out on three singles, but Duong struck out the final two batters to preserve the Army victory.
Lehigh out-hit Army 12-9 in game one, but left 12 runners on base. Junior Gabriella Nori took the loss, allowing four runs on nine hits with five strikeouts.
The Mountain Hawks and Black Knights will play a doubleheader Sunday at the Army Softball Complex at West Point, N.Y. Game one is set for a 1 p.m. start and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
