Lehigh Unable To Hold Early Leads In Saturday Doubleheader At Delaware

3/20/2021 5:02:00 PM | Softball

NEWARK, Del. – Playing its final non-league games of the regular season, Lehigh was unable to hold early leads in both ends of a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Delaware Saturday at Delaware Softball Diamond. The Mountain Hawks lost a 3-0 first inning lead in the opener with three errors contributing to a 5-4 loss. Game two saw Lehigh lead 5-0 and 7-4 but a four-run fifth inning propelled the host Blue Hens to an 8-7 win.

Lehigh heads into Patriot League play with a 2-6 record.

Junior Carley Barjaktarovich and senior Payton Alsobrooks both had four-hit days, while sophomore Emily Cimino had three hits and a team-best five RBIs.

Barjaktarovich opened game one with a double to left and scored two batters later on a Cimino single. Cimino came home on a ground out by junior Addie Kittel and junior Jaelynn Chesson scored on a double by senior Allyson Dibsie, putting the Mountain Hawks up 3-0 before Delaware came to bat.

Delaware (7-0) tied the game scoring two runs in the second and one in the third, with the second and third runs unearned towards freshman pitcher Katelyn Young.

The Blue Hens took a 4-3 lead after four innings on Karolina Flores' second RBI double of the game.

Barjaktarovich and Cimino teamed up again to tie the game in the fifth as Barjaktarovich led off with a single and Cimino doubled her home.

Delaware scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth when Hannah Garber scored on a throwing error by Cimino following a fly out to center.

Both teams registered six hits in game one but three Lehigh errors led to just two of the five runs allowed by Young being earned. Young struck out six and walked three in six innings of work.

Game two also started well for the Mountain Hawks, who had the first three batters reach in the top of the first on a pair of walks and a bunt single. Chesson then cleared the bases with a double to left center, which gave Lehigh another 3-0 lead.

Lehigh loaded the bases again in the second with Cimino plating junior Melissa Fedorka with a sacrifice fly to put the Mountain Hawks up 4-0, and did so again in the third with Barjaktarovich singling home Alsobrooks to stake Lehigh to a 5-0 advantage.

Delaware answered with two runs in the third and two in the fourth to cut Lehigh's lead to 5-4.

A dropped third strike allowed Lehigh to tack on two insurance runs in the fifth. Barjaktarovich reached after striking out, freshman Brooke Cannon followed with an infield single and Cimino doubled them both home to re-establish a three run cushion.

In the home fifth, a walk, a double and an error brought Delaware within 7-5 as Young came back in to replace freshman Ansley Dambach. A wild pitch and a single brought home the tying runs, before Flores delivered yet another RBI double to put the Blue Hens in front.

Lehigh was unable to tie the game against Emily Winburn, who pitched two scoreless innings to save the game for Delani Sheehan.

The Mountain Hawks out-hit the Blue Hens 12-9 but left 10 runners on base and committed two more errors. Alsobrooks went 3-for-4 to lead Lehigh in the nightcap.

Dambach was charged with seven runs (six earned) in four-plus innings. She walked two and struck out one.

The Mountain Hawks open Patriot League play and their home schedule next weekend when they welcome two-time defending league champion Boston University to Leadership Park for four games. Lehigh and BU will play doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday with first pitch both days set for noon.
