No. 25 Lehigh Rallies For 18-16 Win Over Army, Highlighting Saturday Split
2/6/2021 7:53:00 PM | Men's Wrestling
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the second straight week, Lehigh needed a late rally and for the second straight week fifth-year seniors Jake Jakobsen and Jordan Wood delivered. This time it was back-to-back decisions to turn a 16-12 deficit into an 18-16 win over Army West Point for the 25th-ranked Mountain Hawks in the first of two duals Saturday inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
Lehigh's three-dual win streak was snapped in its second dual of the day as No. 14 North Carolina won the middle eight bouts to top the Mountain Hawks 26-6.
Wood and junior Jaret Lane both posted 2-0 days for the Mountain Hawks, who are now 3-3 on the dual season.
Lane and sophomore Mitch Polito staked the Mountain Hawks to a 9-0 lead against Army with back-to-back victories at 125 and 133. The dual began with Lane building a 6-1 lead before throwing Ryan Chauvin to his back for a fall at the 2:19 mark. Polito followed with a pair of first period takedowns against Mark Montgomery and two third period escapes were the difference in a 6-5 decision.
Army West Point (2-2) battled back to tie the dual at 9-9 at the halfway point with wins by decision at 141, 149 and 157.
Sophomore Brian Meyer put Lehigh back in front with a solid 6-3 decision over Will Lucie at 165, but the Black Knights got a major decision from Ben Pasiuck at 174 and a 4-0 win by Taylor Brown over freshman Caden Wright at 184 to go up 16-12 with two bouts remaining.
Jakobsen kept the Mountain Hawks within striking distance with a 7-1 decision over 15th-ranked JT Brown at 197, avenging a loss to the Cadet in last year's EIWA quarterfinals. After a scoreless first period, Jakobsen scored a takedown in the second and added a penalty point for an illegal mat return plus an escape and takedown in the third, along with riding time advantage.
Just like its Binghamton match last Saturday, Lehigh needed a win from Wood to complete the comeback, but this time, merely a decision would do. Wood responded. The first period against Bobby Heald was scoreless but Wood rode out the second and scored an escape, stalling point and takedown in the third to win 5-0, giving Lehigh its sixth straight win in the series.
Lane helped the Mountain Hawks to a strong start against North Carolina, scoring a pair of first period takedowns and a second period reversal in a 7-4 decision over Wil Guida.
Polito scored first against Joe Heilmann at 133 but a takedown for Heilmann at the end of the first period and a strong ride in the second propelled him to a 5-2 decision, tying the dual at 3-3.
Senior Brandon Paetzell made his season debut, wrestling at 141 against 11th-ranked Zach Sherman. The only point of the bout came via a second period Sherman escape. Paetzell took neutral to open the third period and had a good shot attempt in the final minute that he couldn't finish as Sherman held on for a 1-0 victory.
North Carolina (4-2) went on to win eight straight bouts from 133 through 197, including a major decision from top-ranked Austin O'Connor at 149 and a major decision by ninth-ranked Kennedy Monday at 165. Meyer did take Monday down in the third period and rode him out for most of the stanza but fell 10-2.
Wood gave up the first takedown in the final bout of the day against Brandon Whitman, but responded by scoring the final eight, to win 8-2 for Lehigh's second win against the Tar Heels.
There were 13 extra matches contested, seven against Army West Point and six against North Carolina. Freshman Manzona Bryant IV picked up a fall against Army, while sophomore Eli Jones won in tiebreakers at heavyweight. Junior Satoshi Abe and freshman Drew Munch picked up victories against North Carolina.
The Mountain Hawks will wrap-up their weekend with a match against Rider Sunday at 1 p.m. inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The match will be televised on Service Electric Network and streamed at Lehighsports.com/watch. Audio coverage will be available on Fox Sports Radio 1230/1320 AM and 94.7 FM Allentown and LVFoxSports.com.
