BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In the first event of the season, the Lehigh women's cross country team opened up its campaign with an impressive performance against Loyola (Md.). The Mountain Hawks registered the top seven runners between the two teams during the 5K battle. In the end, Madison Zaun's late jolt propelled her past her teammates to secure the individual race win.
In a very unique opening way to the cross country season, both teams gathered inside Rauch Fieldhouse on a cold Saturday evening for a 25-lap 5K. Lehigh had 15 runners enter the race, however only 10 recorded a finish. Five of the runners dropped out after completing a 2K and 3K.
As soon as the race started, Lehigh jumped right out to an early lead. The Mountain Hawks had the top 10-12 runners after the first couple laps and never looked behind them. Pack running was a strength for the Brown and White on Saturday, as the front pack of Zaun, Jamie Zamrin, Christina Yakaboski, Martina Sell, Andrine Larsen and Natalie Condon grouped together for much of the race.
As the race winded down to the final remaining laps, Lehigh's pack started to break apart. The sophomore Zaun jetted pass Zamrin with three laps remaining. Zaun had a five-six second lead on Zamrin with a lap and a half left. On the final lap, Zamrin gave it her all and made it an exciting finish to try and catch her teammate, however Zaun held her off for the top finish.
Zaun finished her 5K in 17:45, while Zamrin ended at 17:47. Finishing third, Yakaboski registered a time of 18:19 and Sell finished fourth with a time of 18:21. In the fifth spot, Larsen recoded a time of 18:30, while Condon had a time of 18:32 in sixth. First-year runner Lindsay MacLellan finished seventh for Lehigh with a time of 18:40. Elyse Barksrom was the eighth runner to finish inside the top 10 for the Mountain Hawks with a time of 18:46.
Sophomore Andrea Miller was the ninth Lehigh finisher and finished 13th overall with a time of 19:06. Grace Kolbe finished 14th with a time of 19:17.
Up next, Lehigh is scheduled to compete against its rival Lafayette next Saturday in Easton.
