BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's basketball team wraps up its pre-finals schedule on Saturday when the Mountain Hawks host Maryland Eastern Shore. Gametime is set for 4:30 p.m. as the second game of a doubleheader with the Lehigh women (who host Binghamton at 2 p.m.). The Mountain Hawks are coming off a competitive 82-72 defeat at Yale in a game that was in the balance into the final minute.
Like its previous two games, Lehigh enjoyed a strong first half, but struggled in the second. The Mountain Hawks' defense was stellar in the first half, allowing just 25 points (holding a 33-25 lead). Lehigh held the Bulldogs to 31.3 percent shooting and 20.0 percent from 3-point range. However, the tides turned in the second as Yale scored 17 points in just the first 4:25 of the second half, finishing with 57. Lehigh scored six more second-half points than it did in the first, but couldn't overcome the Bulldogs' hot shooting. Jalen Gabbidon scored all 22 of his points in the second half. Azar Swain finished with a game-high 23 points for Yale.
Junior Evan Taylor continued his strong offensive play as of late, finishing with a team-high 16 points and grabbing nine rebounds (to eclipse 250 in his career), narrowly missing a double-double. Fifth-year senior Marques Wilson added 15 points while junior Reed Fenton scored a season-high 12. Sophomore Dominic Parolin finished with nine points and five boards, including four offensive boards (leading to several second-chance points). All nine Mountain Hawks who played scored.
Lehigh will face Maryland Eastern Shore for just the second time in program history and first since the Mountain Hawks' 2011-12 Patriot League Championship season. Three of Lehigh's final four nonleague games will be at home, also hosting Albany on Dec. 21 and Eastern University on Dec. 29 before the start of Patriot League play on New Year's Day at American.
Maryland Eastern Shore enters the weekend 2-5, but has had some very competitive contests against quality opponents. Among the Hawks' victories is a 75-73 double overtime win at Fordham of the Atlantic 10. Most recently, The Shore dropped a 72-63 final at No. 17 UConn on Tuesday. Zion Styles leads the Hawks in scoring, averaging 12.3 points per game. Da'Shawn Phillip and Dom London are second, coming in at 9.4 apiece. Maryland Eastern Shore did not compete last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, finishing 5-27 in 2019-20.
Lehigh beat Maryland Eastern Shore, 82-55, in the first and only-ever meeting between the two sides on Jan. 3, 2012. The Mountain Hawks used a 17-0 first-half run to break a 10-0 tie and roll to victory. Twelve different Lehigh players scored, led by 18 points from CJ McCollum.
Saturday's game marks Lehigh's final game until after final exams. The Mountain Hawks will return to action in two weeks, on Saturday, Dec. 18 at Syracuse. Gametime is set for 6 p.m. on ACC Network.
