11/6/2021 11:36:00 PM | Volleyball

EASTON, Pa. – It was a struggle to get much of anything going on the afternoon for the Lehigh volleyball team and despite keeping the score close in the second and third sets, the Mountain Hawks (7-19, 3-12 PL) fell to Lafayette in straight sets (12-25, 23-25, 21-25), suffering the season sweep by the Leopards for the second straight year.

Lehigh jumped out to an early 3-0 lead following a kill for Megan Schulte, Sabrina Lancaster service ace and a combo block for Schulte and Sophia Meagher, but that's when the Leopards took over, equalizing following three straight points of their own. Lafayette then went on a run of 8-1 to take an 11-5 cushion and ballooned the lead back out to 17-8. The Mountain Hawks trimmed the deficit to six at 18-12, but seven straight points to end the set gave Lafayette the 25-12 win.

The Mountain Hawks finished with just four kills and six errors for a hitting percentage of -0.063 in the first set, while Lafayette hit .310 with 17 kills and four errors.

After leading by as many as two points on a duo of occasions to begin the second set, the Mountain Hawks took a 23-20 lead following six of seven points and looked poised of evening the match up at 1-1. However, the Leopards had other plans, using a service error, an attack error and a receiving error to tie the set up at 23-23. Madi Wahrmund and Abby Nieporte closed the case with two straight kills to lift the Leopards to a 2-0 lead.

Lehigh was once again able to play the third set closely, keeping it neck-and-neck to the middle stages. A kill for Sabrina Lancaster gave the Mountain Hawks a 16-15 lead and after the Leopards scored two straight on a kill and a block, Lancaster tied it back up at 17-17 following another kill. Lehigh managed to get back within one point of the lead, but Lafayette went on a 5-2 run to close out the set 25-21 and the match with the sweep.

Sabrina Lancaster and Megan Schulte each led the Mountain Hawks with seven kills, while Schulte added five blocks. Sophia Meagher finished with a team-high six blocks, while Kyleigh Brown led the way with 16 digs. Makena Smith had 13 assists to go along with her nine digs.
