BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team looked like they were in control following sets one and three, but American had other plans, coming back to win in five sets (25-16, 24-26, 25-21, 14-25, 11-15) Friday night at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The loss snaps a two-match win streak for the Mountain Hawks (6-12, 2-5 PL) and gets the Eagles (9-9, 3-3 PL) back to an even .500 record.
It was another solid performance offensively for freshman Megan Schulte, who led her teammates with 18 kills, adding 13 digs. Senior Ava Hudson was excellent with 13 kills, while Lylah Washington followed with 11.
Lehigh opened the first set on a run of 16-7 and looked dominant from first serve. American battled back to cut the deficit to five, but the Mountain Hawks took four straight points to win 25-16.
The Mountain Hawks led for a majority of the second set, getting out to as many as a point advantage, and while they led 24-20 with a match point, the Eagles reeled off six straight to overcome adversity, winning the set 26-24 and evening the match score.
It was a 7-0 start to the third set for Lehigh, which caused AU to call a much-needed timeout. Coming out of the short break, the Eagles scored five straight to cut the gap to 7-5. The Mountain Hawks were able to lead by as many as eight points on multiple occasions in the set and once the Eagles cut the lead to three points at 24-21, Lehigh scored the winner off an AU attack error.
Lehigh led 4-2 to start the deciding fifth set, but AU's 9-1 run made the 11-5 lead insurmountable for the Mountain Hawks. A 5-1 run brought Lehigh within one at 12-11, but the Eagles claimed the final three points to come away with the 15-11 win and 3-2 victory in the matchup.
As a team, the Mountain Hawks hit .156, including .323 in the first and .211 in the third.
Freshman Makena Smith had 51 assists with three service aces and 12 digs, while Ally Thaw had a team-best 21 digs. Sophia Meagher finished with six blocks, while Schulte had four.
For AU, Zeynep Uzen finished with a match-high 22 kills and 12 digs, while Asli Celikkol had 10 kills and Carlie Fiske also finished with 10. Chiara Bosetti had a team-high 26 digs.
Lehigh will look to regroup when heading to Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon, taking on the Crusaders at 2 p.m. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+ (subscription required).
