WORCESTER, Mass. – The Lehigh volleyball team battled to take the third set after going down 0-2, but Holy Cross prevailed in four sets, downing the Mountain Hawks (6-13, 2-6 PL) Sunday afternoon at Blaney Gym. The Crusaders' (2-17, 1-7 PL) win snaps their 13-match losing streak stretching nearly a month as Lehigh dropped its second straight.
Holy Cross never relinquished the lead in the first set, stretching it to as many as four points. The Crusaders won six of the last eight to come away with the 25-20 win. The set win ended up being Holy Cross' first since Sept. 18 against Bucknell.
The Crusaders opened the second set on a 7-3 and led by as many as four points before the Mountain Hawks drew closer, winning five of six to tie the score at 11-11. A 9-3 push had Lehigh up 16-13, but a 12-5 run to end the set gave HC a 25-21 win and 2-0 lead.
Trying to avoid the sweep, the Mountain Hawks had what could have been their best overall set of the season, getting out to a 21-10 lead and holding on for the 25-16 victory. Lehigh hit .500 for the set with 15 kills and just one error.
A 14-5 run to begin the fourth set had Lehigh trailing, but the Mountain Hawks clawed back within four points at 17-13 and within two at 19-17 following three kills and a block by Makena Smith and Emily Stewart. However, a 6-2 run to close the set gave Holy Cross the four-set victory.
