AU tops Lehigh in four sets Saturday afternoon

WASHINGTON – The Lehigh volleyball won another first set against American Saturday evening at Bender Arena, but went on to drop the final three in a four-set defeat to the Eagles. With the loss, the Mountain Hawks (6-14, 2-7 PL) drop their third consecutive match with just seven left on the schedule.
Lehigh looked rather impressive in the first set, hitting .368 with 19 kills and only five errors. The team struggled in sets two and three before hitting .292 in the fourth and final stanza.
The Mountain Hawks led by as many as six points in the first set and hung on for the 25-22 win, despite the Eagles coming within two.
AU opened set 2 on a 10-6 push and while Lehigh made it 11-10, the Eagles rattled off eight straight points to take a commanding 19-10 lead. Bringing the score back within eight, AU took the 10-point win to tie the match at 1-1.
American had a 21-10 lead in set three before Lehigh cut the deficit to seven points at 21-14. American won four of the last six to win the set 25-16. In the fourth, it was a 12-4 open for the Eagles and while the Mountain Hawks were able to get within one, a 7-2 run to close the match was too much and AU got the match win after a 25-19 fourth set victory.
Sabrina Lancaster and Megan Schulte registered 10 kills each, while Emily Stewart hit .368 with nine kills and five blocks. Makena Smith finished with 25 assists and Kyleigh Brown led the way with 17 digs.
The Mountain Hawks return home on Friday at 7 p.m. against Army West Point before taking on Colgate on Saturday at 2 p.m. for Senior Day. The latter match will be streamed live on ESPN+ (subscription required).
