Men's Track and Field finishes fourth at Indoor PLC; Three more events placed on the podium on Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's track and field team finished fourth in the 2020 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend, as the Mountain Hawks accumulated 62 total points. This marks the third consecutive year in which the Brown and White took fourth.
 
The Naval Academy took first and won the team title with 245 points, while Army West Point finished second with 213 points. The Bucknell Bison took third with at 75 points.
 
At the end of the first day, Lehigh placed on the podium twice, as Joey Kelly won the pole vault, and the 4x800 relay team took silver. Today marked another impressive showing from the Brown and White with multiple athletes placing on the podium.
 
Sophomore Michael Nardelli took bronze in the 60mH with a time of 8.29. In yesterday's qualifying, Nardelli advanced with a time of 8.12. Nardelli's performance gifted him his first collegiate medal at Lehigh.
 
Freshman Zach DeLone won his first medal as collegiate athlete in the 200m with a time of 21.84. Despite not qualifying in the 60m, the freshman used it as motivation in his other event. DeLone's 21.84 was faster than his qualifying time on Saturday of 21.94.
 
Closing out the two-day event, the 4000 DMR group of Connor Melko, Brandtson Duffie, Thomas Leitner and Kyle Burke took silver with a time of 10:08.28.

Senior Kyle Sult entered today with the lead in the heptathlon after four events, however failed to place on the podium. Sult finished fourth overall and missed a podium finish by 24 points. Racing besides Nardelli in the 60mH, Evan. El-Halawani placed seventh in the Finals with a time of 8.65.
 
Christian O'Neal finished fifth in the high jump at 6'6.75", while Erik Metz took fourth in the triple jump at 13.78m. Riley Lariviere finished 12th in the shot put at 13.88m.
 
The distance men finished 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th in the 3000m run in two different heats. Slavin finished 16th overall and 12th in his heat with a time of 8:43.46, while Michael Mitchell finished 17th overall and fifth in a different heat at 8:43.55. Jeffrey Kirshenbuam finished 18th overall at 8:44.75, while Brad DeMassa then finished 19th at 8:46.47.

DAY ONE
The first day of the 2020 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championships has concluded, and the Lehigh men's track and field team experienced a rollercoaster type of day. The Mountain Hawks are currently in third with 19 points, trailing Navy (72) and Army West Point (63).
 
The day started off great for the Mountain Hawks, as senior Kyle Sult jumped way out in front in the heptathlon. Through four events, Sult is in first with a total of 2,904 points. The senior broke a PR in three of the four events, as he registered a 7.24 in the 60m, 6.66m in the long jump, 12.11m in the shot put and concluded with a jump of 1.95 in the high jump. Sult is looking for his first-ever Patriot League Championship in the heptathlon and has a 127-point advantage over Navy's Thomas Johnstone.
 
Let's now talk about the best news of the day, as senior Joey Kelly picked up the gold medal in the pole vault. The senior won his first Patriot League Championship in the event, jumping at 16'8.75" (5.10m).
 
The podium finishes didn't stop there for the Mountain Hawks, as the 4x800 relay team of Brandtson DuffieEthan DavisNick Crociata and Kyle Burke took silver with a time of 7:48.08. When the race concluded, there was a moment of silence as they waited for the giant videoboard to post the results. It went from quiet to electric, Lehigh showed up as finishing in second. How close was the finish? Well, Army West Point came in third at 7:48.09, Lehigh's time was 7:48.08. We'll let you picture that incredible finish.
 
That concluded the podium races for the men on Saturday, but plenty of more top performances came from the team in the qualifying round. In the 60mH, the Mountain Hawks will send two guys searching to get onto the podium tomorrow, as Michael Nardelli and Evan El-Halawani both qualified for tomorrow's big race. Nardelli won his heat at 8.12, giving him an automatic berth, while El-Halawani came in at 8.59, good enough to advance. Nardelli had the third fastest time, while El-Halawani's time was seventh.
 
In the 60m dash, Lehigh failed to have Zach DeLone or Samuel Tapera qualify for tomorrow's race. DeLone had a time of 7.05, while Tapera tallied a time of 7.06. The freshman DeLone didn't let the performance get him down, as he then had the second-best qualifying time in the 200m at 21.94. The freshman won his heat and had the second fastest time. He'll go for gold tomorrow afternoon.
 
Erik Metz finished eighth in the long jump at 6.81m, while Anastasios Mouzakis finished ninth in the weight throw at 16.37m.
 
A trio of Lehigh runners finished 11th in their respective events on Saturday, as the sophomore Burke came in 11th in the mile run at 4:21.71, while the sophomore Crociata finished the 800m at 1:57.90. Concluding the athletes that came in 11thBrad DeMassa posted a time of 15:01.85 in the 5000m run, while Jeffrey Kirshenbaum came in 13th and Seth Slavin came in 14th.
 
The Mountain Hawks will look to hold onto their third-place lead going into tomorrow, while having more athletes place on the podium. Events resume tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.
