KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Lehigh softball team capped its opening weekend of play with a 4-2 victory over Saint Joseph's Sunday morning at the Citrus Blossom. Freshman Emily Cimino hit Lehigh's first home run of the season, while junior Lainey Stephenson and sophomore Carley Barjaktarovich each had two hits and a run scored to lead the offense. Sophomore Gabriella Nori and senior Parker Boyd combined to strike out 10 Hawks as Lehigh returns home at 3-2 after its first weekend of play.
The Mountain Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Stephenson and senior Reva Alderman had back-to-back one-out singles. An error by Saint Joseph's right fielder Kirstin Cox on Alderman's single allowed Stephenson to come all the way around to score. An RBI fielder's choice by senior Lexi van Ooyen allowed pinch runner Karsen O'Rourke to come home with Lehigh's second run.
Cimino extended Lehigh's lead with a solo home run to center with one out in the third to put the Mountain Hawks in front 3-0.
Nori struck out five Hawks in three hitless innings in the circle before giving way to Boyd in the fourth.
Saint Joseph's (2-3) put together three hits in the fourth and scored its first run on a Jessica Gaughan RBI single.
Lehigh added to its lead in the fifth as Barjaktarovich and senior Mary-Hannah Smith led off with back-to-back singles. Barjaktarovich eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Addie Kittel.
Saint Joseph's pulled within 4-2 as Molly Kapala led off the sixth with a home run. Caela Abadie followed with a single, but Boyd settled down, retiring the next three Hawks in order to get out of the frame, then set Saint Joseph's down in order in the seventh on three ground balls to Smith at second base.
Boyd allowed two runs on six hits over four innings with five strikeouts and no walks. Lehigh had eight hits off of Saint Joseph's pitching.
Sunday's game marked the first of three meetings between Lehigh and Saint Joseph's scheduled in 2020. The teams will play a doubleheader March 25 at Saint Joseph's.
Lehigh will be off next weekend and the Mountain Hawks will return to action with five games over three days at the NC State Invitational, Feb. 28-Mar. 1 in Raleigh, N.C. The Mountain Hawks will face host NC State once and will play two games against both North Carolina A&T and nationally-ranked James Madison.
