KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Powered by a pair of strong pitching performances, Lehigh opened its season with a pair of victories Friday on the opening day of the Citrus Blossom Tournament. Senior Parker Boyd fired a one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts as Lehigh opened the day with a 1-0 victory over Georgia Southern. Sophomore Gabriella Nori followed by allowing a run on four hits with nine strikeouts as the Mountain Hawks bested defending MEAC champion Bethune-Cookman 2-1.
The Mountain Hawks mustered 10 hits over the two games, but were opportunistic in claiming the two season-opening victories. Senior Mary-Hannah Smith led the way with three hits and senior Reva Alderman, sophomore Carley Barjaktarovich and freshman Emily Cimino drove in runs.
Game one versus Georgia Southern was a true pitcher's duel between Boyd and Rylee Waldrep. Smith led off the season with a single to right field but was the lone Lehigh base runner through four innings. Boyd threw three hitless frames and allowed her only hit on a Mekhia Freeman leadoff single in the fourth. Freeman was erased trying to steal second base.
Lehigh pushed across the lone run of the game in the fifth as junior Payton Alsobrooks drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a Barjaktarovich sacrifice and scored on a single to right by Alderman. Boyd allowed just one walk over the final three innings to cap her eighth career shutout. Lehigh mustered just two hits against Waldrep.
Nori was just as effective against Bethune-Cookman. She hit a pair of batters in the first inning but worked out of trouble by striking out two.
Smith led off the home first by reaching on a three-base error and scored on a Cimino single to put Lehigh up 1-0. The Mountain Hawks then loaded the bases with one out and Barjaktarovich reached on an infield single, scoring Cimino from third.
The two first inning runs stood up as Nori scattered four runs over the final six innings, striking out nine along the way. The only blemish on the day was a solo home run by Sasha Killings with two outs in the fourth inning. Killings doubled with one out in the seventh but Nori struck out the final two Wildcat batters to end the threat.
Lehigh had eight hits against Bethune-Cookman (1-6), with Smith, Cimino and Alsobrooks all registering a pair.
The Mountain Hawks continue action at the Citrus Blossom on Saturday with games against Charleston Southern (12 p.m.) and Appalachian State (2:30 p.m.)
