BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Riding back-to-back wins for the first time in the Patriot League season, the Lehigh men's basketball team travels to Army West Point on Saturday for a big matchup against the Black Knights. Opening tipoff is set for 1 p.m. on the Patriot League Network. With their consecutive victories, the Mountain Hawks have jumped to eighth place in the standings with five games still remaining and an opportunity to climb higher.
Â
Lehigh stands 4-9 in league play and is a game behind Bucknell for seventh, with a home matchup against the Bison on Feb. 23. The Mountain Hawks are three games behind Lafayette, Navy and Army, all tied for fourth place.
Â
In Saturday's win at Lafayette, defense stole the show as the Mountain Hawks held the high-powered Leopards' offense to 59 points. Then on Wednesday, Lehigh's offense stole the show, scoring 89 points - the Mountain Hawks' second highest scoring outburst of the season, only trailing the 95 points at Holy Cross last month. A number of Lehigh players stood out, led by a career-high 19 points from sophomore Jeameril Wilson. At halftime, junior Marques Wilson was on pace for a triple double. He fell a little short, but still posted impressive numbers - 16 points, career-high nine assists, six rebounds and two steals. Marques even took two charges. Meanwhile, senior Jordan Cohen scored 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting while a pair of Mountain Hawks fresh into the lineup after returning from injuries scored nine apiece off the bench. Junior James Karnik had nine on 3-of-4 from the field in his first game since Jan. 5 after missing 10 games. Freshman Evan Taylor got his shot going as well, also finishing with nine.
Â
Wednesday marked Lehigh's first win of the season on a Wednesday, and first victory when allowing 80 or more points. It also snapped a mini two-game losing skid against the Crusaders. The Mountain Hawks shot 50.0 percent from the field (31-of-62) and outrebounded Holy Cross, 35-23. Thirteen of Lehigh's rebounds were on the offensive glass, led by four from Jeameril Wilson and three from freshman Reed Fenton. With the win, the Mountain Hawks snapped a four-game home losing streak and improved to 29-7 in the month of February dating back to 2016. Head coach Brett Reed, who has helped lead the charge, coached his 400th career game Wednesday night (and picked up his 225th win).
Â
Lehigh will look to avenge a heartbreaking one-point defeat against Army West Point on Feb. 1, a game that came down until the final second, literally. Cohen's jumper was off the mark, then sophomore Nic Lynch grabbed the rebound and got a pretty good look, but it wouldn't fall as the Black Knights pulled it out. The second half saw three ties and nine lead changes.
Â
Army has won six of its last seven games overall to improve to 12-12 overall, 7-6 in Patriot League play. The Black Knights won five straight then lost to Boston University and at American, but responded with a 65-48 home win over Lafayette on Wednesday. Senior point guard Tommy Funk leads the offense, averaging 16.5 points and a league-leading 6.7 assists per game. On Feb. 5 vs. the Terriers, Funk became the Patriot League's all-time leader for career assists, eclipsing former Mountain Hawk great Kahron Ross. Another senior, Matt Wilson, comes in at 16.0 points and a team-high 7.8 assists per contest. Lonnie Grayson is also averaging double figures (10.8). A veteran team, only six players have started games for the Black Knights this season.
Â
Army's win on Feb. 1 snapped Lehigh's four-game winning streak against the Black Knights. Army now leads the all-time series, 65-46. Last season, the Mountain Hawks erased three double-figure second-half deficits (18, 11 and 15) to win them all, with the final victory sending Lehigh to the Patriot League Semifinals. The Mountain Hawks have won four of the last five at Army overall, most recently winning 75-70 last season. The first-ever meeting between the two sides came in 1906-07, a 26-24 Lehigh victory. Army won the next matchup in 1914-15 by a 19-6 final.
Â
Lehigh continues on the road next Wednesday when it travels to Colgate. Opening tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
