Lehigh set to host American in Saturday night showdown

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After making its longest road trip of Patriot League play on Wednesday, the Lehigh men's basketball team returns home for consecutive games beginning Saturday night vs. American. Gametime is set for 7 p.m. on Service Electric Channel 50 and the Patriot League Network. Last time out, the Mountain Hawks used a 10-0 second-half run to pull within four at Boston University, but the Terriers responded for the 84-67 win.

Senior Jordan Cohen helped Lehigh get off to a strong start, as he scored eight of his game-high 19 points in the span of 1:20. That turned a 14-12 Lehigh advantage into a 22-15 Mountain Hawks' lead. Cohen contributed in other ways as well, dishing a team-high six assists and tying a career-high four steals while not turning the ball over. As a team, the Mountain Hawks had seven first-half turnovers, but just one in the second half for only eight all game, a season low.

Three other Mountain Hawks scored double-figure points, with freshman Evan Taylor netting 13 (reaching double-figure points for the third time in the last five games), junior Marques Wilson scoring 12 (his third straight game in double figures) and sophomore Jeameril Wilson netting 10 (his ninth game in double figures this season after five his entire freshman year). Sophomore Nic Lynch made his first start of the season in place of junior James Karnik, who was out due to injury. Lynch scored Lehigh's first four points and finishing with six points and three rebounds, but was limited to 19 minutes due to foul trouble.

Boston University opened a 58-44 second-half lead, but the Mountain Hawks used a 10-0 run (beginning and ending with Marques Wilson treys) to pull right back within four. That's as close as Lehigh would come, however. The story for the Terriers was Max Mahoney, who recorded 23 points, 15 rebounds and six assists. Lehigh cut down turnovers in the second half, but the Terriers grabbed seven offensive rebounds, which led to 10 second-chance points.

Lehigh had a steal on all seven of Boston University's turnovers. The Mountain Hawks now have 25 steals over their last three games (with at least seven in each contest).

Wednesday's loss was Lehigh's ninth straight on the road. The Mountain Hawks will be home for each of their next two games, a place where they stand 3-2, with wins in three of their last four. Lehigh will play an American program on Saturday that it's had success against.

American returned a large group of contributors from last year's team that finished fourth in the league standings and hosted a Patriot League Quarterfinal game. So far this year, the Eagles stand 6-8 and 2-1 in league play. Following a league-opening loss at Colgate, American beat Boston University at home (67-63) and Army West Point on the road (68-60). Preseason Player of the Year Sa'eed Nelson leads the Eagles in scoring (15.8 points per game). Jamir Harris (11.3) and Jacob Boonyasith (11.1) are right behind while Stacy Beckton Jr. has grabbed a team-high 5.1 rebounds per contest. American stands in the middle of the pack in the Patriot League in both scoring offense (fourth, 70.2) and defense (sixth, 71.9).

Lehigh has won nine straight games against American to take a 28-26 lead in the all-time series. The winning streak of nine is Lehigh's longest all-time vs. the Eagles. Six of the last 10 games vs. American have come at Lehigh due to Patriot League Tournament games at Lehigh in 2015 and 2016. The Mountain Hawks have won five in a row against American in Stabler Arena. Lehigh and American first played in 1960-61, a 71-61 American victory

Following Saturday's game, Lehigh remains home to host Navy next Wednesday at 7 p.m.
