HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Lehigh men's cross country team finished sixth at the Harry Lang Invitational on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks got a good look of the hilly course in which they will be running on again at the Patriot League Championship in early November.
The Mountain Hawks used the Harry Lang Invitational to preview the course they will be running at in early November. Saturday's race was all about getting a feel of the terrain and experiencing the hills.
"Today was a good warmup to what we will face at the Patriot League Championships," said head coach Todd Etters. "The other league teams looked very good and we will need to learn from today if we want to contend in early November."
With tough competition in Syracuse and several Patriot League schools, the Mountain Hawks came out of the gates as a pack and stayed controlled. The start line at Colgate's course is small and with seven teams competing, it can be chaotic when the gun goes off.
"Any race on this course is going to have a bit of a hectic start because there isn't a whole lot of room to fit everyone, added Etters. "We did a very good job of packing up right away and staying controlled. Throughout the race we managed to stay in a tight pack and that will be the key to our success all year".
Saturday's race saw the Mountain Hawks race as a pack as Lehigh's top 11 finishers finished within two seconds of each other. Ryan Paradise crossed the finish line first for Lehigh with a time of 21:55.80. The senior finished 50th.
"It is nice to see Ryan Paradise leading the team. He does a lot of things right and he has been building for this type of performance since freshman year." said Etters.
From that point on, Lehigh had the next seven finishers. Kip Yegon was the second Lehigh finisher with a time of 21:56.10. Jeffrey Kirshenbaum, Brad DeMassa and Sean Brown finished with a time of 21:56.20. Michael Mitchell finished with a time of 21:56.30, while Nick Norton was right behind with a time of 21:56.40.
Syracuse won the 6.4K Harry Lang Invitational with the lowest score of 31. Navy finished second with 44.
Up next, the Mountain Hawks will race hard at the Lafayette Dual. Next Saturday's race at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course will start at 10:30 a.m.
