Lehigh set to cool off hot Lafayette, Bucknell this weekend in Patriot League openers

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — With a shot to go above .500 for the first time since the second weekend of the season, Lehigh volleyball is geared up and ready for the first Patriot League weekend of the season when the Mountain Hawks head to Easton for The Rivalry against Lafayette on Friday night and on Saturday against Bucknell in Lewisburg. Lafayette and Bucknell are the two hottest teams in the Patriot League heading into this weekend, both riding winning streaks of 10 straight matches.
The Mountain Hawks are 7-7 after the completion of non-league play and finished the Jefferson Cup last weekend in Charlottesville taking two of three matches. Lehigh is coming off a four-set win over UNCG on Saturday after winning the opening match against Elon in four sets. Against the Spartans in the final match of the weekend, Lehigh hit. 238 as a team including .462 in the second set. Junior Sabrina Lancaster led the way offensively with a .486 attack percentage with 21 kills, 14 digs and four total blocks.
Lehigh is hitting .231 as a team this year, good for third in the Patriot League and are led by stats-wise, the league's best hitter in senior Lauren Bright, who leads the way with a .399 attack percentage. She also leads the team with 43 block assists and 47 total blocks this season. Lancaster has been also incredibly efficient so far this season with 146 kills, averaging 3.56 kills per set. She also has managed to gather 83 digs, second on the team with 18 total blocks. Sophomore setter Sarah Carman has 435 assists this season, averaging 9.89 per set, while junior libero Allison Garrett leads the team with 128 digs this year.
The Leopards enter play on Friday as one of the Patriot League's two hottest teams, having won 10 straight matches dating back to Sept. 7 against Penn during the Crosstown Invitational. Lafayette enters play on Friday with a .217 attack percentage as a team, with Madi Wahrmund leading the way offensively (.367) with 55 blocks as well. Grace Tulevech as 200 kills, averaging 3.17 per set, while Leanna Deegan has 198 kills to her name, averaging 3.09 per set. Kelly Austin leads the way with 62 blocks including seven solo blocks, while Katrina Ruggiero leads the team with 147 digs and both Julia Howard and Jenna Bailey have 300 or more assists with 351 and 302, respectively. Lehigh leads the all-time series vs. Lafayette, 60-30. The Mountain Hawks took both matches last season against the Leopards, while Lafayette has not found victory against Lehigh since Sept. 23, 2015 and only twice since Oct. 9, 2009.
Bucknell is another team that has found recent success, having also won 10 straight matches dating back to Aug. 30 against Youngstown State. That was the Bison's only defeat of the season so far. Most recently, Bucknell is coming off a three-match sweep of the Bison Invitational with wins over Delaware State, Fairleigh Dickinson and Hampton. The Bison are hitting .245 as a team through their first 12 matches of the year. Bridgette Holland leads Bucknell with a .322 hitting percentage in 32 sets this season. She also has notched 81 kills, averaging 2.53 per set so far. Sophie Bullard has 127 kills, averaging a team-best 2.95 per set, while freshman Kelsey O'Loughlin paces the team with 456 assists, averaging 10.60 per set. Brooke Stark has 168 digs, with Bullard second at 166. In blocking, Mimi Richards has 43 total blocks this season, 30 block assists and 13 solo blocks. The all-time series is led by Lehigh, 49-29 after the Mountain Hawks swept the season series in 2018. The Bison were last victorious Oct. 27, 2017 against Lehigh.
