BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Off to its best start since 1983, the Lehigh field hockey team heads to New England for a pair of games this weekend – at Holy Cross on Saturday (12 p.m.) and Bryant on Sunday (11 a.m.). The Mountain Hawks enter the weekend with a 5-1 record and 1-0 mark in Patriot League play. Last weekend, Lehigh defeated Colgate on Saturday in thrilling fashion (2-1) before beating Wagner convincingly on Sunday (5-1). This weekend will mark the Mountain Hawks' third and fourth consecutive games on the road.
Saturday's game can be seen live on the Patriot League Network.
Lehigh began last weekend by scoring twice in the final five minutes of regulation to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 regulation win. The goals were scored by juniors Anna Lehman and Drew Pecora. Pecora continued her strong play on Sunday, scoring twice at Wagner, her third multi-goal game in the last five contests. She is now up to seven goals and 16 points on the season, good for fifth nationally in goals per contest (1.17) and sixth in points per game (2.67). On Monday, Pecora was recognized with Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honors. Lehigh has already won all four weekly awards this season.
In Sunday's win, Lehman also scored for a second consecutive game while junior Lenke Havas and sophomore Olivia Perrone scored second-half goals. Freshman Maddie Kahn stopped four-of-five shots sent her way for the second consecutive day.
The Mountain Hawks have scored 17 goals through six games this season, most through six contests since 2004. Lehigh has scored multiple goals in five straight games, its longest streak since 2007. The Mountain Hawks have also allowed just seven goals, fewest through six games since 2000 (also allowing seven in the first six that year). With the strong start, Lehigh came in at No. 24 in the first NCAA RPI released this week. The Mountain Hawks currently own the top RPI in the Patriot League.
Holy Cross is 3-4 on the season, 0-1 in Patriot League play, standing 2-2 at home and 1-2 on the road. Last weekend, the Crusaders dropped their league opener at Lafayette, 8-0 before bouncing back with a midweek win over Bryant (2-1 in double overtime). Madeline Alderfer leads the team in assists (5) and points (7) while Minke Koomen and Lexi Tilton are tied for the lead in goals (3). Emily Devine leads the Crusaders with three defensive saves while Marcia LaPlante has started all seven games in goal, tallying a 2.09 GAA and 81.5 save percentage. Saturday's game will feature the top two goalkeepers in the league in save percentage – Kahn (82.9) and LaPlante (81.5). Kahn is also first in GAA (1.17) while LaPlante is third (2.09).
The Crusaders lead the all-time series, 19-11 and have won two straight – 4-1 last season and 5-1 at Holy Cross in 2017. Prior to that, the Mountain Hawks had won three in a row.
Bryant enters the weekend 0-8, also hosting New Hampshire on Friday. The Bulldogs have struggled offensively, scoring just three goals on the year. However, they have been strong defensively, which has helped them stay in most games. Bryant has four one-goal losses on the year and a pair of two-goal defeats. Bryant's goals have been scored by Eva Bazen, Isa Oldekamp and Taryn Rauff. Marijn Jaarsma has started all eight games in goal, tallying a 2.10 GAA and 74.6 save percentage.
The Mountain Hawks are 1-1 all-time vs. the Bulldogs, winning in 2008 (4-1) and losing in 2009 (3-1).
Following this weekend, Lehigh returns home to host American next Saturday (Oct. 5) and Long Island on Sunday (Oct. 6). Gametimes are set for 11 a.m. and 12 p.m., respectively.
