Reed announces 2019-20 Lehigh men’s basketball schedule

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Continuing its history of challenging itself in nonleague action, Lehigh head men's basketball coach Brett Reed announced the Mountain Hawks' 2019-20 schedule on Monday which features games against five reigning NCAA Tournament teams, including Final Four participant Auburn on Dec. 21. The Mountain Hawks also travel to Virginia Tech out of the ACC and West Coast Conference power Saint Mary's to highlight nonleague play.
"We like to test ourselves in the nonleague portion of our schedule," said Reed. "That includes playing some very nationally noteworthy programs that will challenge us and force us to execute at an extremely high level because we're generally facing more size and athleticism than we might normally face at the mid-major level. There is also the desire to compete against some of our upper echelon peers at the mid-major level. We like to play against teams that are strong and programs that will test us, so we can enter Patriot League play battle-tested and ready."
Lehigh opens its season at home on Tuesday, Nov. 5 vs. Monmouth in what will be the earliest game in program history. The Mountain Hawks then travel to Albany on Friday, Nov. 9. Lehigh returns home for games on Tuesday, Nov. 12 and Monday, Nov. 18 in Stabler Arena with a big road contest in between on Saturday, Nov. 16 – at Virginia Tech of the ACC. Last season, the Hokies finished 26-9, winning two NCAA Tournament games before falling in the Sweet 16. It will mark the first-ever meeting between Lehigh and Virginia Tech.
Following Lehigh's home game on Nov. 18, the Mountain Hawks head to Iowa for a matchup with Drake out of the Missouri Valley on Thursday, Nov. 21. Two days later, Lehigh will play in Northern California at Saint Mary's on Saturday, Nov. 23.
"We have aninteresting swing towards the end of November where we will head to Des Moines, Iowa for a homecoming games for Marques Wilson. That is where a large portion of his family lives," said Reed. "We'll then continue our journey onto Northern California to play against a remarkably strong Saint Mary's team, which by many people's accounts, could be a top 25 team this season."
After the Saint Mary's contest, the Mountain Hawks return to action at Columbia out of the Ivy League on Saturday, Nov. 30. A few days after, Lehigh heads to defending NEC regular season champion Saint Francis (Pa.) to face the Red Flash on Wednesday, Dec. 4. A home game vs. reigning Ivy League champion Yale on Saturday, Dec. 7 marks Lehigh's final contest before a nearly two-week break for final exams.
"Lehigh men's basketball has been fortunate to play well within Stabler Arena. Often, that can create a challenge in getting people to agree to play us here," said Reed. "When we do have those opportunities this season, it's going to be against two pretty strong teams. Most notably, a Monmouth team who really took flight and performed pretty well in its conference this last year. And Yale, who is one of the stronger programs in the Ivy League and was an NCAA Tournament participant last year.
"Those two games should be exciting. Our students have an opportunity to support our team during the fall semester and hopefully will come out strong and support us, along with our community."
Following final exams, the Mountain Hawk travel to Auburn on Saturday, Dec. 21. Last season, the Tigers finished 30-10, beating New Mexico State, Kansas, North Carolina and Kentucky to reach the Final Four where it lost a one-point heartbreaker to eventual national champion Virginia.
Lehigh will round out nonleague play after the Christmas holiday on Sunday, Dec. 29 at Princeton.
The Mountain Hawks open Patriot League play on Thursday, Jan. 2 at Navy before returning home three days later for its home league opener against Loyola on Sunday, Jan. 5.
Lehigh will face each team twice, which includes games against archrival Lafayette – Saturday, Jan. 25 at home and Saturday, Feb. 8 on the road. The Mountain Hawks play reigning league champion Colgate on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at home and Wednesday, Feb. 19 on the road. For the complete schedule, please click here.
