BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With preseason winding down, the Lehigh men's cross country team is eager to begin its season next Friday, Aug. 30 hosting the Lehigh Invitational.
This year's preseason has been a bit different than past preseasons as the Mountain Hawks added eight new faces to the 2019 team. With the eight highly touted freshmen, the Brown and White also return several key veteran pieces and a plethora of young talent. Mix all of those things together and the excitement level is high in Bethlehem.
Entering his 12th season as head coach, Todd Etters confirmed the excitement level "The start of preseason is always an exciting time of the year as we say goodbye to the summer break and welcome the team back to campus," said Etters. "Not unlike many years, our team has seen some changes and we are eager to introduce the freshmen to the program."
"Overall, this may be the strongest class that we have recruited from top to bottom in the middle distance and distance events," stated Etters. "Our coaching staff, support staff an administration deserve a lot of credit for finding the right fits and we look forward to four great years with this group."
This coming season, Lehigh will look to improve upon the 2018 season in which they finished fifth in the Patriot League Championships and 15th at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. Lehigh has its eyes on bigger things in 2019, returning top runners Sean Brown, Jeffrey Kirshenbaum, Brad DeMassa, Kip Yegon, Nick Norton, Avery Lederer and Seth Slavin.
The summer and preseason is the time for teams to welcome in the new faces and get them comfortable and geared up for the season. Despite the addition of eight new faces, Etters is confident that it's the perfect mix for a balanced team.
"The roster will have a collection of savvy veterans and some very capable youngsters. We saw steady improvement over the course of the winter and outdoor track seasons and I am confident our team worked hard over the summer. The Patriot League is full of national-caliber runners and teams and we need to keep raising our level to meet that challenge."
