BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh junior Mary-Hannah Smith and freshman Jaelynn Chesson garnered first team All-Patriot League recognition as the league announced its softball major awards and all-league teams on Tuesday. Smith picked up her third career all-league honor, while Chesson is recognized as a first-team member in her first season in the Brown and White.
The All-Patriot League teams are voted on by the league's seven head coaches.
Smith and Chesson have batted back-to-back in Lehigh's order for most of the season, as they have hit second and third, respectively over the latter part of the season. Both players also rank among the league's leading hitters and are two of the three Mountain Hawks to start all 51 games this season.
Chesson was selected as one of three first team all-league outfielders, stepping in as one of Lehigh's most dangerous hitters. She ranks second on the Mountain Hawks and third in the Patriot League with a .357 batting average and leads Lehigh with 16 doubles, five home runs and 30 RBIs. The Franklin, Tenn., native is also tied for the team lead with 19 runs scored. Chesson's 16 doubles are tied for the Patriot League lead and her 88 total bases are tops in the league. Her 55 hits are second only to Smith's 59.
In 18 Patriot League games, Chesson hit .351 with six doubles, four home runs and 14 RBIs.
Smith makes her first appearance as the first team second baseman after earning second team laurels in each of her first two seasons. She leads the Patriot League with 59 hits and is batting .353 with 14 doubles and 26 RBIs. The Mobile, Ala., native ranks fourth in the Patriot League in batting average. Smith is coming off a 5-for-10 showing with five RBIs in Lehigh's three-game sweep at Colgate in the regular season finale, which earned her Patriot League Player of the Week honors.
In Patriot League play, Smith was especially tough as she tied for the league lead hitting .373 in league games, with 22 hits, eight doubles and six RBIs.
The top two seeds in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament, Boston University and Bucknell, split the league's major awards with BU catcher Alex Heinen winning Player and Defensive Player of the Year and Ali DuBois winning Pitcher of the Year; and Bucknell's Allyse Volpe winning Rookie of the Year and Joey Lye tabbed as Coach of the Year.
Lehigh finished the regular season at 25-26 overall and 11-7 in the league. The Mountain Hawks will open the Patriot League Tournament as the No. 3 seed against No. 2 Bucknell Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at BU Softball Field in Boston. The Terriers of Boston University will face No. 4 Colgate in game one at noon. All games in the Patriot League Tournament will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
